The 1948/49 NHL season was the 32nd season in the National Hockey League . Six teams played 60 games each. The Toronto Maple Leafs won the Stanley Cup after beating the Chicago Black Hawks 4-0 in the final series and were the first to achieve a title hat-trick. Montreal goalkeeper Bill Durnan brought the opposing strikers to despair in 309 minutes without a goal.
