Canada hosted the 1976 Summer Olympics in Montréal with a delegation of 385 athletes (261 men and 124 women) in 173 competitions in 23 sports. Despite the host role, no gold medal could be won as the first and so far only host at the Summer Olympics. Nevertheless, five silver and six bronze medals could be won, the nation being most successful in swimming. Gymnast Karen Kelsall was the youngest participant at 13 years and 220 days, and track and field athlete Alex Oakley was the oldest at 50 years and 89 days. The flag bearer at the opening ceremony was the athlete Abby Hoffman .
