At the 2008 Summer Olympics in the Chinese capital Beijing , 14 artistic gymnastics competitions were held, with both men and women battling for medals in all- around competitions , in teams, on vaults and on the ground . In addition, there were decisions on the balance beam and the uneven bars for the women and on the rings , the parallel bars , the horizontal bar and the pommel horse for the men. A total of 98 gymnasts each took part in Beijing.

Qualification criteria

The 12 best teams from the 2007 World Championships in Stuttgart qualified for the team competition, both for women and men . Each of the 12 qualified teams was allowed to send six starters, so that 72 of the 98 places were taken. The National Olympic Committees of the teams placed 13 to 15 at the World Championships were each allowed to send two starters to Beijing, and those of the teams in ranks 16 to 18 were allowed to send one each. Another six places went to the NOK, whose participants did best in the all-around competition, apart from the 18 NOKs mentioned above. The remaining free places in the field of participants were distributed to less occupied continents and by wildcard according to the performance at the device finals in Stuttgart .

The Chinese gymnastics team won team gold for the women for the first time. However, the performance of the Chinese gymnasts attracted a lot of attention, as the four gymnasts He Kexin, Jiang Yuyuan, Yang Yilin and Deng Linlin are said to have not yet reached the minimum age of 16 years. Yang Yun had already competed illegally at the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney because she was only 14 years old at the competitions, which she later admitted. The international gymnastics federation FIG announced, however, that he had to stick to the passports on which all Chinese women are at least 16 years old.

There was no team from Switzerland or Austria at the start. The German team fell back to seventh place after two falls, including one from Fabian Hambüchen on the horizontal bar, but was able to almost reach the podium on the last device, the pommel horse. China won clearly and was the strongest team in all individual disciplines except on the ground. With a strong performance on the horizontal bar, the last device for them, Japan secured the silver medal ahead of the Americans, who fell back to third place after two poor attempts on the pommel horse.
