history

The place was founded in the 12th century by Hungarian border guards and was first mentioned in writing in 1283 as Asguth . At the beginning of the 19th century the community was divided into places Nižný Hažgut and Vyšný Hažgut (then in Hungarian Alsóásgút and Felsőásgút ), which merged again in 1902. In 1828 a total of 30 houses and 252 inhabitants were counted for both places, who were mainly employed in agriculture and as linen weavers.

Until 1918, the place in Sharosh County belonged to the Kingdom of Hungary and then came to Czechoslovakia or now Slovakia. In 1948 it was renamed Podhorany (means something like "village below a mountain") for national political reasons.
