Schüren is divided into three different settlement areas.

Old stoking

The old village of Schüren is characterized by former farms and its quarry stone walls, which were built from stones from the former Schüren quarry . In this ground monument, Ruhr sandstone, which was intended for numerous Dortmund churches, was broken as early as the Middle Ages. Coal mining was practiced in Schüren well before industrialization. The first miner in the Ruhr area, Konrad von Schüren, was mentioned in a document in Schüren as early as 1296. Heavy industry settled down later. Schüren was the location of the mining supplier Gustav Schade Maschinenfabrik . However, the company premises have since been demolished. The new development area "Am Rosenplätze" has been under construction there since 2007.

To the west of the old town center there was a residential colony for workers from the Schürener Zeche Freie Vogel - unexpectedly, later the nearby steel works Phoenix -Ost of Hoesch AG . The colony was emptied in the 1970s because of the problematic emissions situation and given up as a residential location. The Alt-Schüren-West industrial estate was later built here . The former steelworks has since been dismantled and sold to China. The pioneering residential and commercial project Phoenix-See was built on the renovated site .

Stoke East

Schüren-Ost settlement

To the northeast of the old town center on the southern part of the Schüren field, the new development Schüren-Ost was built in the 1960s. At that time it was regarded as a showcase settlement with a lot of green and open space between the apartment buildings. An attempt was made to transfer the grown social structure of the village of Schüren with its workers to the new residential area and to mix it with the influx of new citizens. The construction of the settlement, which is now over 50 years old, shows planning deficiencies and is controversial.

Residential development Stadtkrone Ost
ADAC headquarters in Westphalia

South of the Westfalendamm , a barracks complex of the British Rhine Army was located in the Schürener area until the 1990s . After the site was given up, extensive demolition work and site renovations were carried out under the direction of the Stadtkrone-Ost-Entwicklungsgesellschaft. Today the Stadtkrone-Ost is an industrial area for start-ups as well as for already existing companies from the IT industry and the service sector . The General German Automobile Club eV (ADAC) maintains its headquarters for the Westphalia area here. Parallel to the commercial area, an exclusive residential area with modern architecture was created in a garden-urban green environment. The private high school Stadtkrone (PGS) is located on the edge of the residential area .
