The Scottish Football League First Division was played for the eighth time in 1982/83 as only the second highest Scottish league . It was also the eighth edition of the men's second division football in Scotland under the name First Division . In the 1982/83 season, 14 clubs competed against each other in a total of 39 matchdays. Each team played three times against each other team. In the event of a tie, the goal difference counted .
The championship was won by FC St. Johnstone , which at the same time secured participation in the Premier Division season 1983/84 . In addition to the Saints , the runner-up team from Heart of Midlothian also rose. Dunfermline Athletic and FC Queen's Park had to relegate to the Second Division . The top scorer with 23 goals was Bobby Williamson of FC Clydebank .
