The Scottish Football League First Division was held for the eleventh time in 1985/86 as only the second highest Scottish league . It was also the eleventh event as the second highest division of men's football in Scotland under the name First Division . In the 1985/86 season, 14 clubs competed against each other in a total of 39 matchdays. Each team played three times against each other team. In the event of a tie, the goal difference counted .
The championship was won by the team from Hamilton Academical , which at the same time secured participation in the Premier Division season 1986/87 . In addition to the Accies , the runner-up FC Falkirk also rose. Ayr United and Alloa Athletic had to relegate to the Second Division . The top scorer with 22 goals was Kenneth Eadie of Brechin City .
