The Scottish Football League First Division was held for the 27th time in 2001/02 as only the second highest Scottish league under this name. In the second-highest division of men's football in Scotland , 10 clubs competed against each other in a total of 36 matchdays in the 2001/02 season. Partick Thistle won the championship , which also secured participation in the 2002/03 Premier League season . The Raith Rovers had to relegate to the Second Division . After the end of the season, Airdrieonians FC filed for bankruptcy and was therefore relegated. The top scorer with 23 goals was Owen Coyle from Airdrieonians FC.
