Seidel is a German family name . It ranks 79th in the list of the most common family names in Germany .

Origin and meaning

Seidel is a typical Silesian family name and originated after the Germanic settlement around 1250. It comes from the Central German "sedelen, sideln" and means "to settle down".

Two alternative explanations of the origin of the name:

1. From the old Germanic first name Siegfried , from the short or diminutive form of Siegfried: Seidel = little Siegfried.

2. As a nickname: The Seidel was a measure of volume for liquids and a measure of grain. The amount was different depending on the region.
