Tohvri is a village ( Estonian küla ) in the rural municipality of Hiiumaa (until 2017: rural municipality Emmaste ). It is located on the second largest Estonian island Hiiumaa (German Dagö ).

description

Tohvri has no permanent residents today (as of December 31, 2011).

The place is located directly on the Baltic coast . The strong west wind, which presses against the island, makes the beaches and the sea at Tohvri restless.

Soviet coastal battery

To the south of the historic village center, near the stony beach, the remains of a large coastal fortification can be seen. It was created by the Red Army near Tohvri in 1940/41 during the Second World War . The main aim was to protect the nearby port of Sõru from attack. The local population had to largely leave the place.

After the war, the military facilities remained largely empty. In 1966 a geriatric institution moved into the barracks . Today the former defenses are under monument protection.
