The final was played at Gamla Ullevi in Gothenburg .

The 2020/21 UEFA Women's Champions League was the 20th edition of the European championship competition for women's football clubs and the twelfth under this name. 62 teams from 50 countries competed for the title. The competition began with the first games of the qualifying round on November 3, 2020 and ended with the final on May 16, 2021, for which Gamla Ullevi in the second largest Swedish city of Gothenburg was selected.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic , the qualifying round has been postponed to November and the format of this round has been changed from mini-tournaments to the simple knockout system .

The defending champions were the women of Olympique Lyon , who last won the title five times in a row and for the seventh time in total. However, they were eliminated this season in the quarter-finals against their national league rivals from Paris Saint-Germain , who in turn failed one round later to the new titleholders of FC Barcelona .

Teams

62 clubs from 50 nations took part in the 2020/21 UEFA Women's Champions League. This included the champions and runners-up of the twelve strongest nations as well as the national champions of other UEFA members. The UEFA five-year rating was used to determine the top twelve national associations . The national champions of the twelve strongest associations - including the defending champion - as well as the runners-up of the eight strongest national associations received a bye and only intervened in the sixteenth-finals in the competition. The remaining national champions and the remaining four runners-up had to first take part in a qualifying round.

mode

First, the clubs from the worst-placed associations played the participants for the main round in a qualifying round, in which 22 other clubs were added. The games from the main round up to and including the semi-finals were played in home and return matches. The team that scored more goals in both games advanced to the next round. If both teams scored the same number of goals, the number of away goals decided. If the number of away goals was the same, the second leg was extended. If both teams scored the same number of goals in extra time, the away team won due to the more away goals scored. If no goals were scored, the match was decided on penalties. The final was decided in one game. In the event of a tie, extra time followed and then, if necessary, a penalty shoot-out.
