Together with the universities of Paris, Toulouse, Avignon and Montpellier, the University of Orléans is one of the oldest universities in France and Europe, its foundation dates back to 1230. Already in 1235 the city of Orléans was given by Pope Gregory IX. bestowed the right to teach Roman law ; In 1306 the University of Orléans was founded by papal bull by Pope Clemens V. In the years after its founding, St. Yves and Clemens V studied law in Orléans and contributed to the good reputation of the university. Above all, it benefited from the fact that the teaching of Roman law had been banned in Paris since 1273. Several professors and many students came to Orléans because of this. The university town thus became a center of law, especially civil law. The "Latin Quarter" of Orléans was created in the historic old town south of the cathedral. The professors mostly taught in their own homes. The "Salle des Thèses" building from the 15th century with its pointed arches served the university as a library and was also an examination room. Jean Calvin was a student here and also taught for a short time in Orléans. The university's decline intensified from 1679 when Roman law was taught again in Paris. In 1793 the university was closed during the French Revolution .

In 1960, the university reopened on campus in the satellite town of Quartier de la Source . When it reopened , Minister Pierre Sudreau referred to Orléans University as the "French Oxford". The university has managed to maintain its reputation over the centuries to the present day. It is therefore still one of the most important universities in France, especially in the field of law. The university management has moved into the Château de la Source near the source of the Loiret . Today the university is divided into four faculties (French: facultés ). At the study sites Bourges , Chartres , Indre ( Châteauroux / Issoudun are located) and Orléans four institutes (French. Institute Universitaires de Technologie ) and a polytechnic school (French. Ecole polytechnique ). The President (= Rector ) of the Orléans University is Ary Bruand.
