Egan Bernal and Primož Roglič are the top favorites for overall victory

Defending champion Primož Roglič (Jumbo-Visma) is competing in the Tour de France after being eliminated due to a crash in order to win the Tour of Spain for the third time in a row. Also at the start is Egan Bernal, the winner of the Giro d'Italia 2021 , as well as his Ineos Grenadiers teammate Richard Carapaz , winner of the road race at the Olympic Games in Tokyo and third place in the Tour de France. Tour winner Tadej Pogačar declined to participate. With Alejandro Valverde and Fabio Aru (Qhubeka-NextHash), two more Grand Tour winners will compete, but they will at best be given outsider opportunities in the overall standings. On the other hand, Alexander Wlassow (Astana), Miguel Ángel López , Enric Mas (both Movistar), Hugh Carthy (EF Education-Nippo) and Mikel Landa (Bahrain-Victorious) are contenders for top positions. Of the ten fastest drivers from last year , only Daniel Martin and David Gaudu are missing from the start list.

Favorites for stage wins in the mass sprint are Fabio Jakobsen (Deceuninck-Quick Step), Arnaud Démare (Groupama-FDJ), Jasper Philipsen (Alpecin-Fenix), Michael Matthews (BikeExchange), Juan Sebastián Molano (UAE Team Emirates) and Davide Cimolai (Israel Start-Up Nation). With Guillaume Martin (Cofidis), last year's winner of the mountain classification is back at the start.

route

The Vuelta a España 2021 begins with an approximately seven-kilometer individual time trial in the provincial capital of Burgos . After the flat second stage, there is already a mountain arrival at Picón Blanco on the third section . Stages 2 and 4 to 6 are flat and suit sprinters and puncher . The seventh stage is the first of seven high mountain stages, it ends with another mountain arrival near Alicante .

The second week of the tour begins with a flat section along the Spanish Mediterranean coast, before the 9th stage is decided at another mountain arrival at Alto de Velefique . In Almería , the tour takes the first day of rest and reaches its southernmost point on the tenth section, which is also mainly carried out along the coast. With the hilly stages 11 and 12, the course continues back inland. At around 204 kilometers, the 13th stage is the longest section of the Tour of Spain in 2021 and again offers sprinters an opportunity to win the stage. Two more mountain stages follow in Extremadura and Castile-León .

On the second day of rest there is a transfer from central Spain to Santander on the north coast. The last six stages, starting with the flat 16th section, will be held in Laredo , Cantabria , Asturias and Galicia . This is followed by mountain stages to the Lagos de Covadonga and the Altu d'El Gamoniteiru , a hilly stage between Tapia de Casariego and Monforte de Lemos and the last mountain stage with five mountain ratings and over 200 kilometers in length into the Galician Mos . The decision in the overall standings will be made in the 33.8-kilometer final time trial of the 21st stage, which ends in Santiago de Compostela .

As in the previous year, the Vuelta in 2021 will only be held within Spain.

Regulations

The regulations and the prize money of the Vuelta 2021 are set out in the Specific Regulations, Awards & Technical-Sports Regulation Handbook .

Ratings

The leader of the overall standings wears the red jersey . As always with stage races, the overall ranking results from the addition of the times driven. For the first stage there is - except for time trial stages - 10, 6 and 4 seconds time bonuses. Additional bonus seconds (3, 2 and 1 second) are awarded once per stage in an intermediate sprint or a mountain classification. The two time trial stages are also excluded here.

The leader in the points classification wears the green jersey. The point evaluation results from the addition of the points of each stage and the intermediate sprints. In the previous events of the Vuelta, the same number of points was awarded at the finish of each stage. For the 2021 edition, points were awarded according to the profile of the stage, just as the Tour de France and the Giro d'Italia practice. There are therefore more points on flat stages than on mountain stages and in the time trials, so the sprinters have a higher chance of winning the points classification.

The leader in the junior ranking, which is reserved for drivers born after January 1, 1996 and follows the rules of the overall ranking, wears the white jersey. At the beginning of the race, 52 riders were included in this classification, i.e. around 28% of the peloton .

The team ranking results from the addition of the times of the three best drivers of a team on each stage. The drivers of the leading team wear a red number on their backs.

At all stages with the exception of the time trial, the most combative rider is awarded a yellow number by a jury. This jury also selects the most combative driver of the tour.
