Special ammunition depot of the US Army in Germany 1976
Husterhöh barracks in Pirmasens, 1953

The 59th Ordnance Brigade was an association of the US Army . The brigade with its headquarters in the Husterhöh barracks in Pirmasens comprised over 6,500 soldiers. It was responsible for special ammunition dumps in which nuclear weapons were stored that the allied NATO partners could use in the context of nuclear participation .

history

Sleeve badge of the 59th Ordnance Brigade

The 71st Ordnance Battalion was activated in the Federal Republic of Germany in 1955 . In 1959, AWSCOM was formed from the battalion . On March 24, 1962, it was renamed the 59th Ordnance Brigade .

In October 1972 SASCOM and some units were taken over. The brigade then carried the addition of SASCOM. The orders for possible nuclear weapons operations were transmitted on two different telecommunications networks, depending on whether they were NATO ( SACEUR ) or US (CINCEUR) nuclear weapons. The NATO radio frequency network was called "Last Talk". CINCEUR was able to send "Emergency Action Messages" to the nuclear weapons depots, the custodial detachments (which in turn gave the respective national commanders clearance) or to the US troops with nuclear weapons. For this purpose, CINCEUR had access to the high-frequency telecommunications network "Regency Net" with headquarters in Pirmasens. Constantly checked long-distance connections across half of Europe from Flensburg on the Baltic Sea to Erzurum in Eastern Anatolia guaranteed the immediate forwarding of orders and messages. The connection across the Alps to southern Europe was made from SHAPE from Flobecq (BE) via Landstuhl (KriegsHQ Maßweiler for USAREUR , Kindsbach for USAFE ) and the Feldberg in the Black Forest to Dosso di Galli on Lake Garda (IT) (KriegsHQ West Star for southern Europe).

In June 1992 the brigade was deactivated after completing its task of removing a large proportion of nuclear weapons from Europe.

It was reactivated in 1994 at Redstone Arsenal Base , Alabama.

Overview

As of June 1, 1976, the units of the brigade were at the following locations in the Federal Republic of Germany (with the armed forces of Belgium , the Netherlands , Canada and from 1960 to 1966 also France ), the Netherlands, Italy , Greece and Turkey (where the units in the latter three states were subordinate to the Southeastern European Task Force in Vicenza , while Pirmasens was in charge of technical supervision):
