Under the title Anthology ( english , collection ') published the Beatles in 1995 to 2003 comprehensive review of her artistic work. Three double CDs or three triple records, a VHS box, a LaserDisc box and a book were released. In 2003 the footage was also released as a DVD box.

The music albums

When working on the anthology albums, the remaining three Beatles wanted to include the late John Lennon . When Yoko Ono entrusted them with four earlier demo recordings of Lennon called Grow Old with Me , Now and Then , Real Love and Free as a Bird , they digitally revised them in collaboration with Jeff Lynne and added newly recorded vocal and instrumental tracks. The four pieces date from 1977 to 1980, during which Lennon composed a lot on the piano in his apartment in the Dakota Building in New York and recorded his ideas on a cassette recorder.

The three double albums contain recordings of early performances, demos , studio outtakes and unpublished titles from the years 1958 to 1970 and thus convey an impression of the musical development of the group and also allow for the first time an insight into the studio work of the Beatles.

All three albums were released on CD as well as on vinyl and cassette .

Cover design

The design of the three corresponding album covers and DVD covers (placed side by side they create an overall picture) comes from Klaus Voormann , a friend of the Beatles from the Hamburg days in the early 1960s, and the photo-realist Alfons Kiefer.

Anthology 1

The album opens with the song Free as a Bird , which was later released as a single and marketed as the first new Beatles song in 25 years.

The other tracks on the album cover the early years of the Beatles, starting with the band recordings of the Quarrymen from 1958, the musical journey through time continues with the first studio recordings in Hamburg under the direction of Bert Kaempfert in 1961, the demo recordings for the audition at Decca in 1962, the first recordings under the direction of George Martin to the recordings for her fourth studio album Beatles for Sale in 1964.

Anthology 2

Like its predecessor, this album begins with a new Beatles song: Real Love . As before with Free as a Bird , Paul McCartney , George Harrison and Ringo Starr had reworked a demo version of an old Lennon composition in collaboration with Jeff Lynne . The album then leads through the musical work of the Beatles during the years 1965 to 1968, including recordings from the sessions for Help! and Rubber Soul and Revolver . A highlight are the different takes from the recording sessions for the title Strawberry Fields Forever , which give an insight into the creation of the title.

Anthology 3

Although the original plan was to release another new single, it didn't materialize. Work on the Lennon composition Now and Then was discontinued due to the fragmentary quality of the demo version. Even the demo recording of the second new single release ( Real Love ) was in a very bad condition when it was handed over by Yoko Ono and could only be restored and processed with the greatest technical effort. So it happened that an unpublished instrumental piece by George Martin from 1968 opened the third anthology album instead of a new, previously unreleased Beatles song.

The third part of the anthology series leads through the last creative years of the Beatles and includes recordings of the band from 1968 to 1970. It begins with recordings from the sessions for the album The Beatles (colloquially: White Album ) and ends with the last joint Studio work for the albums Abbey Road and Let It Be .
