Arthur Edward Ellis (born July 8, 1914 in Halifax , West Yorkshire , † May 23, 1999 ) was an English football referee . Career

Ellis was active as a referee in the English First Division from 1936 . In 1950 the Football Association sent him to the 1950 World Cup finals, in which, in addition to a game in the group phase, he also led a game in the final group phase in the 7-1 victory of the host Brazilians over the reigning Olympic champion Sweden . Even within the country's borders, Ellis was entrusted with important games, so he was responsible for the 1952 FA Cup final between Newcastle United and Arsenal FC . He was then a referee in five games at the Helsinki Olympics, including leading the final between Hungary and Yugoslavia . Two years later he was again one of the referees at the World Cup, the quarter-final game between Brazil and Hungary in the 1954 World Cup, which he whistled , went down in history as the Battle of Bern due to the brutal style of play - Ellis was sent three dismissals .
