13 of the 14 former doors and windows on the ground floor of the Mitte train station were also designed - as in this case with depictions of Dresden Airport and the airport train station . However, they are not part of the railway arch gallery.

The railway arch gallery is a series of 40 murals in the city center of Dresden . The large-scale street art work , carried out using graffiti technology, was created between 2005 and 2007 on the occasion of the 800th anniversary of the Saxon state capital in 2006 . It extends over a length of almost 750 meters, but with several interruptions. The gallery's murals are located along the northwest side of the Könneritzstrasse , part of the 26er Ring , in the Wilsdruffer suburb . They are located on the facades of bricked-up arches of several elongated arched bridges , which are part of the Děčín – Dresden-Neustadt railway line in their higher inner-city section between Dresden Hauptbahnhof and Dresden-Neustadt station and are therefore owned by Deutsche Bahn . These are the more than 100 meters long city viaducts I, II and III, which are considered to be “significant in terms of urban development history” and are therefore protected as technical monuments in Dresden .

Of the 40 murals, 16 are related to Dresden and 10 to other Saxon locations, some of which are in the Dresden area. The other 14 murals are neutral and have no recognizable location reference. Almost all of the 40 works show aspects of the overarching theme of infrastructure, many of which are dedicated to public transport . The vast majority of the images show means of transport, mostly vehicles and their infrastructure. Electricity, water and gas supply as well as sewage disposal play a minor role. Most of the pictures are photo-realistic, sometimes collage-like representations, but there are also some illusionistic and comic-like works. Sometimes there are connecting elements to neighboring images. The images all have approximately the shape of segments of a circle with a chord length (width) of around nine and a height of four meters. They are framed by the sandstone arches of the viaducts with their gray-beige tones. The doors and ventilation grilles that are contained in almost every railway arch were also painted over.

structure

The railway arch gallery is divided into five parts, which are interrupted by passages or trips. It starts with arch 1, which is opposite the building at Kraftwerk Mitte 16. Between Part I (Arch 6) and Part II (Arch 7) the passage from the Mitte power plant to its visitor parking lot runs in an unnumbered arch , which is on the other side of the Děčín – Dresden-Neustadt railway line in the triangle of the Berlin – Dresden railway line that branches off there is located. Schweriner Straße runs under the railway line between Part II (Arch 13) and Part III (Arch 14) . Part III (wall picture 23) is followed by the Jahnstraße railway overpass, to which the Dresden Mitte train station connects to the northeast . 13 of the once 14 doors and windows on the ground floor of the former station building are also walled up and decorated with murals, which, however, do not belong to the railway arch gallery and also differ stylistically from it. The railway arch gallery continues in the northeastern station area with part IV (arch 24). Arch 31 is part of a passenger tunnel created during the station renovation in the 2000s and is therefore the only numbered arch that is not painted. The Friedrichstrasse railway overpass is located between part IV (arch 33) and part V (arch 34) . The railway arch gallery ends with arch 41 directly in front of the railway overpass over federal highway 6 ( Magdeburger Strasse ) at Ostra-Allee .

history

Already in the 1990s there was a few graffiti in the area of the later gallery. At that time, however, many of the railway arches were empty, only a few could be locked and served as storage. A problem at that time was the illegal dumping of waste in the open railway arches. In order to counter this and at the same time design the facility and provide areas for legal graffiti, the idea arose to wall up the bridge arches and the areas that were created To provide street art works. This followed the example of the Mitte train station, the facade of which had already been decorated with murals in the 1990s, which were redesigned after the station renovation carried out between 2001 and 2004. In June 2005, as a job creation measure coordinated by the Saxon Retraining and Further Education Center (SUFW), twelve long-term unemployed and apprentices began the masonry work, which was done with demolished bricks from the VEB Bramsch . In September 2005 the first design drafts were presented in the New Town Hall and ten of them were selected. At the end of the same month, work began on the ten arches in today's Part III between Jahnstrasse and Schweriner Strasse under the motto "Dresden - City of Technology". On November 25, 2005 the Verkehrsverbund Oberelbe presented the first completed pictures of the railway arch gallery to the public.

Then the work on parts I and II continued, finally parts IV and V were completed. The goal of designing all 40 arches by the city anniversary in 2006 was not achieved. Overall, the four participating graffiti artists, two of them from Dresden and two from Torgau , worked on the major project over a period of two years, but in between they were also busy with other works. The design options for the drafts were initially quite free. Soon, however, pure commissioned work developed by sponsors who took over 3500 euros for the preparatory work and the design of a sheet and were able to determine the motifs and bring in their logo. Original plans to depict aspects of the art city and the sports city of Dresden and to provide 13 more arches on the other side of the viaducts each with a motif from the then twelve Dresden twin cities and from Dresden itself were not implemented.
