In the 19th century the community usually had well over 1000 inhabitants; As a result of the phylloxera crisis in viticulture and the mechanization of agriculture , the number of inhabitants then fell continuously to the lows of the 1940s to 1970s. Due to the proximity to Angoulême and the significantly lower property prices in the countryside, there has been a significant increase in the population over the past few decades.

economy

For centuries, the inhabitants of the community lived on the principles of self-sufficiency from agriculture; the cities of Cognac and Angoulême were hardly possible as market places because of their distance. The soils of the municipality are now part of the Grande Champagne within the Cognac wine-growing region .

history

The existence of a Romanesque priory church testifies to the history of the place, which goes back at least to the Middle Ages.

Triumphal arch scheme on the west facade of the Saint-Pardoux church
  • The parish church of Saint-Pardoux dates - apart from a chapel extension from the 14th century - from the second half of the 12th century and was formerly a priory church of the Baignes Abbey . The exterior of the polygonal broken apse is structured by half-column templates into which five blind arches with slender windows are embedded, which in turn are accompanied by set columns and covered by differently ornamented arches. The upper end is formed by a surrounding block frieze with a console frieze below , the spaces between which ( metope fields ) are decorated with ornaments. The portal zone of the church, framed by buttresses , shows the triumphal arch scheme often found in Charente with perfectly crafted and very well-preserved decorations on capitals and archivolts ; in the zone above there is a row of arcades with six blind arches and a slightly higher central window arcade ; a console frieze runs above it; the gable field has no decoration. The nave is covered by a brick vault added in the 19th century; A domed vault is located below the squat looking crossing tower . The church was recognized as a monument historique in 1954 .
  • In the old cemetery of the place there is an openwork disc cross or Celtic cross , which some researchers assign to the 11th century; however, later dates are also postulated. It has also been recognized as a monument historique since 1990 .
