Slab for the Ruhr area

The Schurenbachhalde is an about 50-meter (highest point 86 m above sea level. NN ) former Bergehalde the coal industry in Essen district elderly food . The dump is named after the "Schurenbach" water body that was buried under it in the 1970s and is located directly on the Rhine-Herne Canal , between Emscherstraße and Nordsternstraße and near the Nordsternpark Gelsenkirchen .

The heap was used by the Zeche Zollverein to store overburden until it was closed in 1986 . Until the mid-1990s, other hard coal mines also dumped their overburden on this mine dump . The dump was then renatured and converted into a landscape monument.

On the top of the heap is the landmark of the 15 meter high sculpture Bramme for the Ruhr area by the American artist Richard Serra, erected in 1998 .

The Schurenbachhalde is part of the Route of Industrial Culture and is to become part of the International Horticultural Exhibition in 2027 .

Location, elevation profile

You can reach the Halde plateau with its panoramic view and the Bramme either via a stepped path from the east (from Emscherstraße directly north of the underpass under the A42 uphill to the west) or on serpentine gravel paths from the west, via access from Nordsternstraße.

Slab for the Ruhr area

Narrow side

The slab for the Ruhr area is a minimalist sculpture by the American artist Richard Serra .

It was erected on November 10, 1998. It stands on the highest point of an elliptical level, which is only covered with the debris from the former mine dump and therefore has the character of a lunar landscape. The flanks of the heap are greened and provided with hiking trails. The broad sides of the slab are aligned exactly to the east / west and inclined by 3 ° to the south.

The slab is visible from afar as a landmark. It is made of steel, is 14.5 m high, 4.2 m wide and 13.5 cm thick, its weight is 67 tons. It was manufactured in France by the Creusot-Loire-Industries company , as there was no longer any production facility in the Ruhr area for this size at the time of manufacture. The cost of the landmark was DM 1 million; 90% of them were financed from state funds.
