Senado Federal do Brasil

The Senado Federal do Brasil ( Senado Federal for short , German  Federal Senate of Brazil ) is the upper house of the National Congress of Brazil .

General

It was founded in Rio de Janeiro in 1824 with the adoption of the first Brazilian constitution as Senado do Império do Brasil (Senate of the Brazilian Empire ) . The first legislative session took place on May 6, 1826 with 31 senators. After the founding of the republic from the Old Republic and up to the Vargas era , two senators each represented their states. In the Estado Novo and the repeal of the constitution, Senate activity was suspended from 1937 to 1946. The Senate was not re-established until the 38th legislative period from 1946 to 1951.

The Federal Senate of Brazil today consists of 81 seats: three each for each of the 26 states of Brazil and the Federal District . The senators are elected for eight years by majority vote. The election in the states is staggered, so that on a given election date only two thirds of the senators are elected, while the remaining third is then elected four years later. The Senate is now in Brasília .

Since 1995 he has published the Jornal do Senado .
