Since the middle of the 20th century there has been a steady increase in the population of the small wine village, which is mainly due to the influx of people from Clermont-Ferrand.

economy

The Romans may have already grown wine in the area; In the Middle Ages, wine was used for mass celebrations. For centuries, viticulture and agriculture played a central role in the town's economic life, which was largely geared towards self-sufficiency. There were also smaller traditional craft businesses ( blacksmiths , coopers , wheelwright , potters, etc.) to supply the surrounding farms with things that could not be made there yourself. In the 19th century, more modern craft trades such as baker, butcher, etc. were added.

history

Few records exist of the history of Châteaugay. In the run-up to the French Revolution , i. H. In May of 1789 the Marquis de Lafayette and the Marquis de Laqueille met in the town's castle to prepare the convening of the Estates General .

Viticulture

The surrounding mountain slopes are made of volcanic rock and are therefore well suited for growing wine. The Gamay and Chardonnay grape varieties are grown on an area of around 100 hectares ; the Pinot Noir variety is limited to a few hectares. A varietal, dry white wine is made from the Chardonnay grapes - a blended, dry red wine is made from Gamay and Pinot Noir grapes. The area belongs to the Côtes d'Auvergne wine-growing region and the municipality is allowed to market its wines under the designation of origin Côtes d'Auvergne AOC and also under Châteaugay AOC .
