The Chevrolet Bolt is an electric car made by the US automobile manufacturer Chevrolet . It was unveiled in January 2016 and has been in production in the United States since early November 2016. The vehicle has been marketed by Opel under the name Opel Ampera-e since 2017 and in England as Vauxhall Ampera-e until 2019.

Despite the similarity of names, both variants can be distinguished from the plug-in hybrid vehicles Chevrolet Volt and the original Opel Ampera , which use an internal combustion engine to extend the range and are based on Voltec drive technology .

history

The electric car was presented as a concept at the Detroit Auto Show (NAIAS) 2015. At CES 2016, the production model was presented by Mary Barra , CEO of General Motors. In the same month, the key data of the series vehicle were presented and the series vehicle was formally shown for the first time at a vehicle fair (NAIAS 2016). Production started in early November 2016.
Chevy Bolt was voted Car of the Year (North America) in 2017 . Maven, a car rental company from GM plans 100 Chevrolet Bolt in Los Angeles use. More are to follow in San Diego and San Francisco later .

General

The Chevrolet Bolt is designed as a compact class vehicle. The space available is realized by accommodating the energy storage system in the vehicle floor (as with the Tesla Model S ). This also allows the vehicle's center of gravity to be kept low. GM tested such an arrangement in the form of a so-called " skateboard chassis" beforehand in its fuel cell electric prototypes GM Autonomy, HY-WIRE and drivable with the GM Sequel.
The main supplier of the Chevrolet Bolt is the LG Group . The South Korean conglomerate not only supplies the drive battery , but is also responsible for the extensive
battery management , electric motor, inverter module, air conditioning, charging unit and infotainment system, among other things .

Opel Ampera-e

Ampera-e nameplate

In Europe, Opel offers a vehicle derived from the Bolt, the Opel Ampera-e .

In Asia and the USA only single-phase alternating current is common in households. Bolt and Ampera-e can be charged single-phase with 230 V alternating current with up to 32 A, i.e. with a maximum of 7.4 kW. Single-phase charging with 230 V alternating current is limited in Germany to 20 A and thus 4.6 kW charging power in order to avoid unbalanced loads according to TAB . Three-phase 22 kW (3 × 32 A) would be possible according to TAB. The adaptation of the Ampera-e for the use of the three-phase distribution in private houses, which is common in the EU , has not yet been carried out. At public charging stations it is possible to charge single-phase with alternating current of up to 32 A and thus 7.4 kW, because the alternating current on- board charger has not yet been designed to be more powerful and not multi-phase. The DC -Schnellladung on Combined Charging System (CCS) is possible with up to 55 kW - in tests, however, only 30 to 35 kW have been achieved.

In Austria, as in most other countries, the Ampera-e could only be ordered from the end of 2018, because the first small Europe contingent was divided between Norway, Germany, the Netherlands and Switzerland.

According to the Federal Motor Transport Authority , eight Opel Ampera-e cars were registered in Germany between April and June 2017. In 2018 there were 385 and in 2019 120 vehicles. In 2017, the Ampera-e won the Golden Steering Wheel in the small and compact car category .

Since the end of 2019, the Ampera-e has only been available in Switzerland, Norway and the Netherlands. The reason for this is the realignment of the model platforms after the takeover of Opel by PSA .

The top speed is electronically limited to 155 km / h in favor of the greatest possible range  .

EPA range in km of the best-selling EVs in Germany in 2017 compared to the EPA range of the Chevrolet Bolt

Range

According to the EPA driving cycle, the Bolt has a range of 383 kilometers; this was officially confirmed in mid-September 2016. The EPA range in city traffic is 410 kilometers. On the highway it drops to 349 km.

For the European variant Opel Ampera-e, a range according to NEDC of 520 km is specified. The combined WLTP range is estimated to be “more than 380 km”, which corresponds to the range according to EPA.

Mark Phelan, a journalist from Detroit Free Press, drove 90 miles (145 km) with an outside temperature of about −10 ° C and then had a remaining range of 103 miles (166 km). He had set the air conditioning to around 17 ° C and turned on the steering wheel, seat and windshield heaters. Bolt EV driver Glenn Williams managed to cover 300 miles (483 km) on a full charge. The temperature was 16 ° C, so that he could drive without the air conditioning switched on. He covered 100 miles (161 km) on the highway and 200 miles (322 km) in city traffic. According to a Chevrolet engineer, the Chevrolet Bolt has a range of approximately 160 miles (257 km) when driven at full throttle with an outside temperature of 18 ° C. During a test drive from Seoul to Jeju in South Korea, YouTube author Bjørn Nyland covered a distance of 470 km and had a remaining range of around 30 km.

battery

The accumulator developed and built by LG Chem has a usable capacity of 60 kWh. The previous hybrid model Volt / Ampera could use around 11 kWh. The electric cars Nissan Leaf , BMW i3 and Renault ZOE could offer a maximum of half the capacity until the beginning of 2016, BMW and ZOE now have 41 kWh on offer. The bolt accumulator consists of 288 individual lithium ion cells, which are installed in 96 groups with three cells per group. The weight of the accumulator is 435 kg. Opel gives a battery guarantee of 8 years or 160,000 km of mileage.

Charging options

Bolt / Ampera-e can charge single-phase with alternating current (up to approx. 32  A , up to approx. 7.4  kW ). DC quick charging is possible via CCS with up to 50 kW.

Furnishing

The Intelli-Link infotainment and the "personal online and service assistant" OnStar , which will be discontinued at the end of 2020, are offered.

The electric car has three driving modes that can be selected using the selector lever:

  • “Drive”… If you take your foot off the accelerator, the recuperation takes place in a “normal” extent, so to speak.
  • "Low" ... In this mode, recuperation takes place to a greater extent; the car is decelerated more and the battery is charged more than in "Drive" mode. The car can even come to a standstill without using the brake pedal.
  • "Rain on Demand" ... Here, the strength of the recuperation can be varied manually as required using a rocker attached to the left behind the steering wheel. ("Regen" stands for regeneration , i.e. energy recovery via recuperation; on demand stands for "as required")

The navigation takes place exclusively via the smartphone . The two competing systems Android Auto and CarPlay are available for integration into the infotainment system .

The trunk has a capacity of 310l according to ECIE, and 1005l when the rear seat backrest is folded up under the roof. The loading sill has a height of 84.1 cm from the floor.

safety

In the crash tests carried out by the IIHS for the 2017 model year , the Chevrolet Bolt received the rating “Good” in the “Moderate overlap front” test and was awarded the “Top Safety Pick 2017”. NHTSA awarded an overall rating of five stars in the US NCAP crash test carried out for the 2018 model year . The European variant Opel Ampera-e received an overall rating of four stars in the Euro NCAP crash test carried out in 2017 .

production

The Bolt is manufactured in Orion , Michigan . The Bolt is initially available in the United States.

Chevrolet Bolt EV concept

Production should start in October 2016 with 25,000 to 30,000 pieces in the first year. Production can be increased to over 50,000 pieces per year depending on demand. Production finally began at the beginning of November 2016 - starting at a rate of nine pieces per hour, slowly increasing to 30 pieces per hour.
