The Douglas County is a county in the US -amerikanischen State Wisconsin . In 2010 , the county had 44,159 residents and a population density of 13 people per square kilometer. The county seat is Superior , which was named after Lake Superior .

Douglas County is part of the interstate Twin Ports metropolitan area around the port cities of Superior and Duluth in Minnesota.

The county is located in the far northwest of Wisconsin and is bordered to the north by Lake Superior, one of the five Great Lakes . Douglas County borders Minnesota to the west . Douglas County covers an area of ​​3833 square kilometers, of which 442 square kilometers are water.

In the northwest, the county is bounded by the Saint Louis River and its confluence with Lake Superior. A little further east, the Nemadji River flows through the northwest of the county to its confluence with Lake Superior. The Saint Croix River , a left tributary of the Mississippi, rises behind the watershed between the Great Lakes and the Mississippi in the south-central part of the county .

Stephen A. Douglas

Douglas County was formed on February 9, 1854 as the original county from the Wisconsin Territory . It was named after Stephen A. Douglas (1813–1861), a US Senator and presidential candidate.
