The 1972/73 season of the ice hockey Bundesliga was the 15th season of the highest German ice hockey league . The German champions were EV Füssen , who won their 16th, but (for the time being) last, title in a duel with the defending champion Düsseldorfer EG .

New to the league was the record champions Berliner SC , who finished sixth in their first season after returning to the Bundesliga. In order to reduce the number of Bundesliga teams to ten teams, there were two direct relegations this season. In addition to the newcomer EV Rosenheim , ESV Kaufbeuren also had to join the second Bundesliga , which was newly founded after the season . But the Cologne EC returned to the 1st Bundesliga.

requirements

Attendees

After the Preussen Krefeld withdrew before the previous season, it was unclear whether there should be one relegated and thus two promoted players from the league or only one promoted. The DEB finally decided Solomonically that there should be no relegated but two promoted. Therefore, the Bundesliga played with eleven teams this season.

mode

As in the previous year, the teams played the German champions in a double round, so that each club played two home and two away games against the other teams. The last two placed had to relegate to the newly founded 2nd Bundesliga at the end of the season , as the league was downgraded from eleven to ten teams. The champions of the Oberliga rose to the Bundesliga.
