The European Ice Hockey Cup in the 1980/81 season was the 16th edition of the competition of the same name by the International Ice Hockey Federation IIHF . The competition began in October 1980; the final was played in August 1981. A total of 18 teams took part. The CSKA Moscow defended the title for the third time in a row.
Mode and participants
The national champions of the game year 1979/80 of the European members of the IIHF were qualified for the competition. The competition was played in the knockout system in a two-legged manner. The final was played in a group of four in the mode everyone against everyone.

1 round
The first round games were played on October 9 and 23, 1980. Twelve teams played the six qualifiers for the second round.
1 Both games took place in Heerenveen.
2nd round
The second round games were played on November 5 and 19, 1980. The six winners of the first round as well as the two seeded participants - Mannheimer ERC and EHC Arosa - played the four qualifiers for the third round.
3rd round
The third round games were played on December 4, 1980 and January 3, 1981. The four winners of the second round as well as the four seeded participants - HIFK Helsinki, Brynäs IF Gävle, TJ Poldi SONP Kladno and the defending champion CSKA Moscow - played the four qualifiers for the final tournament.
2 Both games took place in Mannheim.
Final tournament
The final tournament was held from August 4th to 9th, 1981 in Ortisei, Italy . The games took place in the St. Ulrich ice rink with a capacity of 4,000 spectators .
