The Football League Second Division 1928/29 was the 33rd season of the Football League Second Division as the second highest English football league . It began on August 25, 1928 and ended on May 4, 1929.

Second division champion was Middlesbrough FC and also the second-placed Grimsby Town rose to the Football League First Division . For the two promoted teams in the following second division season 1929/30, the two first division clubs FC Bury and Cardiff City, which are ranked in the table below, took their places. Port Vale and Clapton Orient had to descend from the Second Division , with Port Vale henceforth having to compete in the North Season Football League Third Division North and Clapton Orient in the Football League Third Division South . Instead of the two clubs took the free positions in the following season 1929/30 Third Division North champions Bradford City and from the Third Division South the winner Charlton Athletic .
