James Norton (politician)

James Norton (born October 8, 1843 in Mullins , Marion County , South Carolina , †  October 14, 1920 ibid) was an American politician . Between 1897 and 1901 he represented the state of South Carolina in the US House of Representatives .

Career

James Norton interrupted his education in 1861 to serve as a soldier in the Confederate States on civil war participate. After the war he continued his education. Between 1866 and 1870 he taught himself as a teacher in public schools. He was also active in agriculture and trade. In the years 1870 and 1872 he was elected district school commissioner. Politically, Norton joined the Democratic Party . Between 1886 and 1891 he was a member of the House of Representatives from South Carolina . From 1890 to 1894 he acted first as deputy and from 1894 to 1897 as the actual head of the audit office of South Carolina.

After the resignation of Congressman John L. McLaurin , James Norton was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC as his successor in the sixth constituency of South Carolina . There he took up his new mandate on December 6, 1897. After re-election in 1898, he could remain in Congress until March 3, 1901 . During this time the Spanish-American War fell .

In 1900 Norton decided not to run again. Subsequently he worked in agriculture and in the real estate industry. In 1907 and 1908 he was again a member of the House of Representatives from South Carolina. James Norton died on October 14, 1920 in Mullins and was buried there.
