Juri Michailowitsch Borsakovsky ( Russian Юрий Михайлович Борзаковский , English transcription Yuriy Borzakovskiy ; born April 12, 1981 in Kratowo , Moscow Oblast ) is a former Russian middle-distance runner and Olympic champion .

Career

In 1999 he became the European Junior Champion in the 800 meter run . At the European Indoor Championships in Ghent in 2000 he won in 1: 47.92 minutes ahead of the German Nils Schumann . In Sydney at the Olympic Games 2000 he reached the final and was sixth in 1: 45.83 min.

At the World Indoor Championships in 2001 in Lisbon, he won in 1: 44.49 minutes with almost two seconds ahead of the South African Johan Botha . In 2002 at the European Championships in Munich , he did not go over 800 meters. As the final runner of the Russian team in the 4 x 400 meter relay , he secured the silver medal behind the British for his team.

In Paris / Saint-Denis at the 2003 World Championships , Borsakowski was again in an 800 meter final. As is so often the case, he ran the first lap last, only to get into position on the last back straight and put on his sprint. In Saint-Denis he did not quite reach the Algerian Djabir Saïd-Guerni . Borsakowski won silver in 1: 44.84 minutes, three hundredths of a second behind Saïd-Guerni and six hundredths of a second ahead of third-placed South African Mbulaeni Mulaudzi .

He achieved his greatest triumph at the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens when he became Olympic champion in 1: 44.64 minutes ahead of Mulaudzi and Wilson Kipketer from Denmark. At the World Championships in Helsinki in 2005 , like in Paris, he was runner-up. In 1: 44.51 min he was clearly behind Rashid Ramzi from Bahrain, who won in 1: 44.24 min.

In front of the home crowd at the 2006 World Indoor Championships in Moscow, Borsakowski was unable to catch up with the Kenyan Wilfred Bungei and the South African Mulaudzi in the sprint . Borsakowski won bronze in 1: 47.38 minutes.

He also won bronze at the 2007 World Championships in Osaka. In 1: 47.39 min he was 0.3 seconds behind the winner Alfred Kirwa Yego , but the gap of 0.19 seconds on the eighth of the final showed that Borsakowski showed old strength in the sprint.

In 2008, he surprisingly retired from the Olympic Games in Beijing as third placed in his semifinal run, after having demonstrated his best form earlier this year with a time of 1: 42.79 min. In 2009 he won the title at the European Indoor Championships in Turin and was fourth at the World Championships in Berlin . Two years later he won another bronze medal at the 2011 World Championships in Daegu . After Borsakowski had never competed on the 800-meter course at the European Championships, he won the title in a pure lane separation at the European Championships in 2012 .

With a height of 1.82 m, his competition weight was 72 kg. Most of his successes he achieved by running at the very back on the first lap and avoiding any position fights. In the last 300 meters he then sprinted over all or almost all of the competitors. His ability to run with quick start times if necessary, made him hardly predictable for his opponents.

In July 2014, Borsakowski announced his retirement from competitive sports.
