Since the mid-15th century they went mostly to about to become " coppersmith to call" or "Kaltschmied" while Kessler as now belonging to the dishonest occupations counted tinkers were called. In Austria, alpine servants were also referred to as Kessler, probably because of their occupation with cheese preparation, and in Swabian the overseers of the smithy and pans in the salt works. In the Alpine countries, the name is also derived from the term: The person living in the valley basin.
