history
The first mention of Sittensen dates back to 1020. It is a document from the Verden diocese, which names the place as Chessinhusen . However, the land must have been settled much earlier. It is believed that the first settlements arose between Sittensen and Klein Meckelsen in the early Middle Ages , but exact dates are not known.
The historic village center of Sittensen is in what is now the southern part of the village, where the market square, St. Dionysius Church and the old water mill, which was built in the 16th century , are located. Since that time, the center of the town has developed away from the original core, but is still there in its historical image.
The municipality of Sittensen was established by law in 1960 as a merger of the municipalities of Groß Sittensen and Klein Sittensen.
In recent history, Sittensen has gained notoriety, particularly due to its rather negative media presence. In the 1990s, for example, there was headlines about an increased rate of leukemia in children in Sittensen. A similar case in the municipality of Tespe in the Harburg district was attributed to increased radiation exposure from the Krümmel nuclear power plant and the GKSS research center in Geesthacht, which, however, could not apply to Sittensen. Reports prepared by the University of Bremen justified the cases with a defective X-ray machine , but were ultimately inconclusive.
Another high-profile incident occurred on the night of February 5, 2007, when seven people were found shot dead in the Lin Yue Chinese restaurant.
In addition, in 2008 there was an arson attack on a Muslim prayer room. The perpetrators, who spoke on the same evening about the establishment of a local NPD association in Sittensen, belonged to the right-wing extremist scene.
In 2010 there was an attack on a pensioner in Sittensen. One of the perpetrators was shot dead by the pensioner. The relatives of the murdered perpetrator then sued the pensioner. For a long time, the attack and the indictment in court made headlines in numerous national media. At the instigation of the robber's family, the pensioner was charged with manslaughter. The trial before the Stade Regional Court began on April 23, 2014, and on October 27, 2014 the pensioner was sentenced to a nine-month suspended prison sentence for manslaughter. Both the public prosecutor and the defense appealed against it. The Federal Court of Justice sentenced the pensioner to nine months' probation for manslaughter in a judgment dated October 25, 2015.
religion
In Sittensen there is an Evangelical Lutheran congregation (St. Dionysius Church), to which most of the denominationally bound citizens belong, as well as a congregation of the independent Evangelical Lutheran Church (Christ Church) and a free evangelical congregation; in addition, a small number of Jehovah's Witnesses and believers in Islam . The Roman Catholic Christians of the place belong to the Herz-Jesu-Gemeinde in Tostedt .
