doping
In this competition there were two doped athletes, both sprinters from Nigeria .
- Innocent Asonze , eliminated in the run-up - In June 1999 he missed a doping test. As a result, his results from these world championships were revoked. Also disqualified was the 4 × 100 m of his country, in which Asonze had run. The bronze medal initially won there had to be given back.
- Davidson Ezinwa , eliminated in the semifinals - His sample of a doping test after the semifinals was positive, the protein hormone HCG was found. Thereupon he was excluded from further participation in these world championships - his use as a member of the subsequently disqualified 4 x 100 meter relay was intended.
The following athletes suffered:
- Chris Donaldson , New Zealand - He would have qualified for the quarter-finals as third in his preliminary run based on his placement.
- Reanchai Seerhawong , Thailand - he would have qualified for the quarterfinals with his 10.45 seconds over his time.
- Mathew Quinn , New Zealand - he would have qualified for the semi-finals by finishing third in his quarter-finals.
