The Luiss ( Libera Università Internazionale degli Studi Sociali Guido Carli ; German: Free International University for Social Studies ) is a free private university for social sciences in Rome with approx. 9000 students affiliated with the Italian employers ' association Confindustria . The Luiss is widely regarded as one of the two best universities in Italy . In the field of economics, it competes with the Luigi Bocconi University in Milan. The campus is located a little northeast of the city center in Parioli .

The educational institution was founded in 1946 as the first private university in Italy to be founded after the Second World War , initially as a Catholic university under the name Istituto di Studi Superiori Pro Deo by the Roman Catholic clergy Fr Félix Andrew Morlion, a Belgian Dominican priest , and Msgr. Antonio de Angelis and since 1948 it has been called Università Internazionale degli Studi Sociali “Pro Deo” . The founders' connections to US intelligence services, which had been rumored since 1968, and various scandals led to the institution's ecclesiastical identity being abandoned in the early 1970s. Since it was transformed into a secular private university in 1974, the university has been closely associated with the Italian national employers ' association Confindustria .

It has three faculties: law, economics and political science. There is also a journalism school, a business school and, since February 2010, a School of Government, which offers English-language master’s courses (Master in European Studies, Master in International Public Affairs).

The Luiss is widely regarded as one of the two best universities in Italy . In the field of economics, it competes with the Luigi Bocconi University in Milan. The campus is a little northeast of the city center.

The annual tuition fee is around € 8,400 for the bachelor's degree programs and up to € 12,000 for the master’s degree. The university strives to recruit outstanding talent worldwide; Admission tests take place in spring and autumn.

In addition to the main location in viale Romania ( Trieste ), there are six locations. Many buildings are housed in historical palaces and villas. Admission to the university campus is only possible with a student ID.

The Luiss operates among other foreign sponsorships with Stanford University , the EBS University of Business and Law , the Free University of Berlin of the University of British Columbia , the ESCP Europe and the WHU - Otto Beisheim School of Management .
