The 2009-10 NBA season was the National Basketball Association's 64th season . The regular season began on October 27, 2009 and ended on April 14, 2010. This was followed by the NBA playoffs on April 17, 2010, which ended in mid-June with the NBA finals .

Season course

Referee strike

The 57 professional referees of the NBA announced after the unsuccessful collective bargaining negotiations with the NBA in Chicago that they would not take part in the annual training camp before the start of the season. The NBA did not react to the behavior of the referees and locked them out for the pre-season. Instead, referees from lower leagues and the WNBA whistled in preparation . Shortly after the pre-season, an agreement was finally reached and the professional referee squad took over the regular season and the playoffs as referees.

Regular season

The regular season began at the end of October with the games Boston Celtics - Cleveland Cavaliers (95:89), Washington Wizards - Dallas Mavericks (102: 91), Houston Rockets - Portland Trail Blazers (87:96) and Los Angeles Clippers - Los Angeles Lakers (92:99). The New Jersey Nets started the season with a record of 18 straight losses. Also in the further course of the season they could not leave the last place in the table. In the Chicago Bulls' game against the Denver Nuggets on November 10, 2009, it was only after ten minutes of video study that it was possible to determine who had won the game in the last tenths of a second: With 0.3 seconds on the clock, Kirk Hinrich threw from the Bulls to Brad Miller , it turned and hit. After Dwight Howard of the Orlando Magic responded to the loss to the Detroit Pistons and his dismissal with criticism of the referees, he was fined $ 15,000 on November 11, 2009.

At the end of the regular season, the best teams of the previous year were in first place in both the West and the East ( Los Angeles Lakers and Cleveland Cavaliers ). The teams from Dallas , Utah , Denver and Phoenix follow in the west, while Orlando , Atlanta and Boston are in the east . The surprises of the season include Oklahoma , which made it into the playoffs in the west, and the Milwaukee Bucks in the east , who are fifth with their rookie Brandon Jennings .

The negative surprises in the west were the Houston Rockets and the New Orleans Hornets , both of which are not represented in the playoffs for the first time in a few years, and the New Jersey Nets in the east , which have long been on their way to setting a new negative record, which was only avoided by an intermediate spurt at the end of March.

At the end of the regular season, the Chicago Bulls secured the final play-off spot alongside the Los Angeles Lakers, Oklahoma City Thunder, Dallas Mavericks, San Antonio Spurs, Phoenix Suns, Portland Trail Blazers, Denver Nuggets, Utah Jazz, Cleveland Cavaliers, Orlando Magic, Charlotte Bobcats, Atlanta Hawks, Milwaukee Bucks, Boston Celtics, and the Miami Heat.

All-Star Game

The 2010 All-Star Game took place on February 14, 2010 in front of 108,713 spectators at Cowboys Stadium in Arlington . The pick of the East won the game 141-139. The game's MVP was Dwyane Wade of the Miami Heat .
