Pontmain is a French municipality with 825 inhabitants (as of January 1 2017) in Mayenne in the region Pays de la Loire . It belongs to the arrondissement of Mayenne and the canton of Gorron (until 2015: canton of Landivy ). The inhabitants are called Pontaminois .
The place is known for a Marian apparition recognized by the Catholic Church . On January 17, 1871, some children from Pontmain claimed to have seen the Virgin Mary in heaven. This alleged Marian apparition was recognized on February 2, 1872 by the Bishop of Laval , Casimir-Alexis-Joseph Wicart .
As a result, a basilica was built between 1873 and 1877.

Pontmain is about 48 kilometers north-northwest of Laval . Pontmain is surrounded by the neighboring communities of La Bazouge-du-Désert in the north and west, Landivy in the northeast, Saint-Mars-sur-la-Futaie in the east and Saint-Ellier-du-Maine in the south.
