Le Grand Coudray Castle

Villaines-la-Juhel is a commune with 2,808 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in Mayenne in the region Pays de la Loire ; it belongs to the arrondissement of Mayenne and the canton of Villaines-la-Juhel . It is an access community associated with the Normandy-Maine Regional Nature Park .

history

In the Middle Ages, the Lords of Mayenne built a castle on a hill around which the town developed. Aigilbert, Bishop of Le Mans , gave the Sainte-Marie monastery half of the income from Villaines and other places in 692. In 892 Villaines is attested under the name Vilhena.

In 1140 Mathilde of England gave Villaines to the knight Juhel II of Mayenne; the place took its name. At that time a castle was built, of which only the foundations of the donjon remain today. The Champagné family owned the place until the revolution .
