The home book of the community Engelskirchen documents: "Freiherr von Quadt, Haus Alsbach, received a certificate of mutation on iron ore in 1746 in the 'Schönenborner Felde', parish of Hohkeppel." On October 3, 1799, a Karl Funk acquired this right of mutation . The Eisensteinzeche in Schönenborn was called "Marschall Vorwärts" (the company was based in Werden / Ruhr), mentioned in a water law agreement between the colliery and the citizens in 1857. A special path led from the shaft to the Eisenstein wash to the Loxsteeg south of Schönenborn . The mining operation in Schönenborn ended in 1860. The length of the tunnel is only assumed, it was about 200 meters. The tunnel served as a hiding place and bunker during World War II, and its entrance is still preserved.

In 1954 a connection path to Schmitzhöhe was created .

Due to § 10 and § 14 of the Cologne Act , the municipality of Hohkeppel was dissolved in 1975 and extensive parts of Lindlar were incorporated. Including Schönenborn.
