history

The name Schümmerich is derived from "Schumm", a fallow piece of land. For example, a grassy and not very fertile corridor.

In 1413, Unterschümmerich was first mentioned in a document in the treasury register of Fronhof Lindlar under the place name "Schonenberch" . In another document from the 15th century it was noted about Schümmerich: "Schoenenbergh: 1 good, pays 18 denarii" . Both Unter- and the neighboring Oberschümmerich belonged to the Helling Honschaft in the Middle Ages .

In the map Topographical Survey of the Rhineland from 1825, Unterschümmerich is recorded on a delimited courtyard with 5 separate building floor plans.

In 1941 the place names were changed to Lindlar. In the minutes of the council of March 24, 1941, it is noted that Ober- and Unterschümmerich are only to be referred to as Schümmerich in future.
