The church village of Hohkeppel is a district of the municipality of Lindlar in the Oberbergisches Kreis in North Rhine-Westphalia . It is located about seven kilometers southwest of Lindlar, south of Schmitzhöhe .

At the same time, Hohkeppel was an independent rural community from 1806 to 1974, together with numerous surrounding residential areas, and as such belonged to the Engelskirchen mayor in the Wipperfürth district in the 19th century .

history

History of the parish village of Hohkeppel

The place was first mentioned in a document in 958 as “The brothers Walfrid and Humfrid to the St. Severinstift their allod with the church of Kaldenkapellen and their own property , the farms Hufenstuhl , Vellingen and Tüschen u. a. Income ”, after which the certificate was drawn up in the presence of King Otto I and his brother Archbishop Bruno of Cologne .

This document needs special mention, it is one of the oldest still existing documents of the Bergisches Land and it is considered an important document of the time when the own churches in this case Hohkeppel, Bruno of Cologne at the same time Duke of Lorraine, in many documents in the Archdiocese of Cologne these churches donated to pens in order to strengthen the position of the churches at the expense of the counts as manors. This document owes its preservation to a forgery carried out in the 12th century. However, the text of the document goes back to a clearly existing document as a template, the forged seal of the Archbishop of Cologne, Bruno, also comes from this period.

The St. Laurentius Church from the 12th century was demolished in 1835 with the exception of the west tower and replaced by the current church. There are three church bells from the 15th and 17th centuries in the church tower .

In the 14th century there were disputes between Lindlar and Hohkeppel over the tithe . The consequence of this dispute was that around 1400 Hohkeppel was legally separated from the Lindlar parish . The new parish Hohkeppel comprised the honors Tüschen and Vellingen .

In 1555, the Lindlar and Overather regional courts were combined and the seat moved to Hohkeppel. In the period that followed, there was talk of the " Keppel District Court " (= Hohkeppel). The seal image of this court served as a template for the Lindlar coat of arms. At the end of the 17th century, Hohkeppel faded into the background as a venue, although the court kept its name. From 1691 the court was called "Churfürstliches Hohen Keppeler Landgericht zu Lindtlar", the place of the hearing was now Lindlar and no longer Hohkeppel.

As for Lindlar and other Bergische places, there are clear traces and evidence of ore mining, whereby the former Castor mine gained greater importance for what was then Hohkeppel.

History of the rural community of Hohkeppel

Boundaries of the municipality of Hohkeppel in 1958

Due to an exchange of territory, the Duchy of Berg was ceded to France by King Maximilian I Joseph of Bavaria in 1806 and thus became the French satellite state of the Grand Duchy of Berg . After the fundamental French administrative reform, Hohkeppel formed a newly founded rural community with the honors Tüschen and Vellingen , which belonged to the Mairie ( mayor's office ) of Engelskirchen in the canton of Wipperfürth in the Elberfeld district . From 1816, the rural community was part of the Engelskirchen mayor of the Wipperfürth district and thus part of the Kingdom of Prussia (first the province of Jülich-Kleve-Berg and from 1822 the Rhine province ), which largely took over the administrative structure as a successor to the French.

The border between the communities of Lindlar and Hohkeppel ran along Hommerich, Oberbergscheid, Vellingen and Oberfrielinghausen. The northern border to the municipality of Kürten coincides with today's municipal border of the municipality of Lindlar, the western border ran beyond the villages of Brombach and Brombacherberg, which are now part of Overath . In the south , the municipality of Hohkeppel bordered the Agger .

In addition to the main town, the municipal area in the 19th century included villages and places to live: Berghausen , Bilstein , Böke , Bomerich , Brandsheide , Brombacherberg , Burg , Ebbinghausen , Fahn , Fischsiefen , Georghausen , Griessiefen , Hagen , Halfenslennefe , Herkenhähn , Herrenhöhe , Hohbusch , Holl , Hommerich , hooves , lime kiln , Kartenlennefe , Castor , Keppelermühle , blade Rath , Köttingen , Krähsiefen , Leffelsend , Leienhöhe , Lenneferberg , Lennefermühle , Loxsteeg , Luttersiefen , waste Emich , upper mountain Scheid , Oberbrombach , upper Frielinghausen , Rehbach , Schmitz height , Schönborn , Sieferhof , shrub , Tüschen , Unterbergscheid , Unterbrombach , Unterfrielinghausen , Vellingen , Wallerscheid , Welzen and Welzerberg .

The community encyclopedia for the province of Rhineland from 1909 gives a population of 1,526 for the rural community of Hohkeppel (1,521 Catholic and five Protestant denominations), who lived in 51 places with a total of 276 houses. The area of the municipality (2,021 hectares ) was divided into 821 hectares of arable land, 115 hectares of meadows and 967 hectares of forest. By 1905 the population had dropped to 1,328.

On January 1, 1975, the municipality was assigned to the municipalities of Overath (cf. § 10 No. 2 Cologne Act ), Engelskirchen (cf. § 13 Paragraph 2 No. 2 Cologne Act) and Lindlar (cf. § 14 Para. 1 Cologne Act).
