Coordinates: 37 ° 4 ′  S , 144 ° 13 ′  E Mount Alexander Shire is a local government area (LGA) in the Australian state of Victoria . The area is 1529.6 km² and has about 18,800 inhabitants.

Mount Alexander is located in the center of Victoria about 120 km northwest of the capital Melbourne and includes the following villages: Nuggetty, Baringhup, Maldon , Walmer, Ravenswood South, Harcourt, Sutton Grange, Welshmans Reef, Newstead, Sandon, Yapeen, Guildford, Castlemaine, Chewton, Elphinstone, Metcalfe, Fryerstown and Taradale. The seat of the City Council is located in the town of Castlemaine, which has around 9,000 inhabitants, in the center of the LGA.

The area around Mount Alexander is best known as the gold rush region of the 19th century. The gold rush past and the numerous historical buildings and mines make the Shire with the capital Castlemaine a tourist destination. The place Malden was preserved in the style of the 19th century and bears the title First Notable Town as an outstanding historical legacy of Victoria and offers two kilometers of historic streets and gold mine tours as well as an old steam train.

The region is also a magnet for Australian artists: around 400 active artists and artisans of all kinds have settled there, in addition to actors, painters and sculptors z. B. also instrument makers and glass blowers. In addition, since the 1960s the Shire has developed into a center for vehicle tuning , especially for historic automobiles. Several well-known workshops are based there and Castlemaine is also called the " Street Rod Center of Australia".

The Shire's largest industrial employer is one of Australia's largest meat and sausage producers with KR Castlemaine .

The Mount Alexander Shire Council has seven members, who are elected by the residents of the five wards. Of these five districts, Calder, Coliban, Loddon, and Tarrengower have one each, and Castlemaine Ward has three councilors. The mayor of the council is also recruited from among the councilors.
