The Saarland University (in short: Saarland University and Saarland University , pseudo-Latin name Universitas Saraviensis ) is the only Saarland University . It is based in Saarbrücken and Homburg .

The campus , whose core is the former Below barracks, is located in the middle of the city forest within the St. Johann district . Around 17,000 students are currently enrolled ; the proportion of foreign students is over 19 percent. About 3000 people are employed, including about 250 student and research assistants.

The University is known internationally by the computer science research and part of the top cluster software cluster. In the “NanoBioMed” area, natural and materials scientists work together with doctors and pharmacists. The close ties to France and the focus on Europe are further trademarks.

history

The university was founded in 1948 with French support in Saarland , which was then politically semi-autonomous and economically linked to France . It emerged from the Institut d'études supérieures de Hombourg , which was initially attached to the University of Nancy ; On March 8, 1947, the first institute of the Saarland University was inaugurated in Homburg as a branch of the University of Nancy. Then on April 9, 1948, the University of the Saarland began teaching in Homburg. On November 15, 1948, teaching began in the former Below barracks in the Saarbrücken city forest. Thanks to its bilingual teaching staff, Saarland University united German and French educational traditions and had an international profile since its founding, which began in 1950 with the proclamation of the “European University” and in 1951 with the establishment of the Europa Institute as the “crown and symbol” of the university found visible expression.

Since October 2016 the university has been divided into six faculties :

  • Faculty of Empirical Human Sciences and Economics (HW)

    • The medical faculty is located on the premises of the Saarland University Hospital in Homburg . With 30 specialist clinics and 20 institutes, all major medical specialties are represented here. The faculty has a biomedical focus (with collaborative research centers and clinical research groups). Basic research at a high level ensures that in the future doctors will be able to better recognize and treat diseases using new diagnostic methods and therapies.
  • Faculty of Mathematics and Computer Science (MI)
    • Subjects: computer science , mathematics
    • Around 800 scientists are researching the entire spectrum of computer science topics, including IT security and artificial intelligence , in six globally renowned research institutes . According to the CHE university ranking, computer science at Saarbrücken is one of the best universities in Germany (top 4 (2009), top 2 (2012), top 5 (2018)).

    • Subjects: life sciences , chemistry , materials science and engineering , pharmacy , physics , systems engineering
    • The main focus is on promising areas such as biotechnology or high-tech materials, for example the development of new medical active ingredients, the optimization of material surfaces or the physical basis of processes in cells and organisms. Together with the Medical Faculty, the NT Faculty supports the Center for Human and Molecular Biology (ZHMB) . It represents the basis for biomedical research networks within the university's focus NanoBioMed - Life and Matter .

  • Faculty of Law (R)
    • With the Europa-Institut and the Center juridique franco-allemand , the faculty has several unique selling points: In addition to the Saarbrücken professors and visiting professors, top EU officials from the various institutions of the European Union as well as executives from the judiciary, administration and business teach here . Another specialty of the faculty is the Saarbrücken Institute for Legal Informatics with a focus on IT security and data protection.

Course offer

The range of courses includes around 130 subjects (including around 50 bachelor's and master's degrees, four state examination subjects, 20 with a teaching degree and a dozen postgraduate courses). The offer also includes around 30 international subjects, more than half of which provide for a double degree.

The largest courses include the courses of medicine , law and pharmacy, the bachelor and master’s courses in business administration , computer science and psychology , the bachelor’s courses in business and law (B.Sc.), business informatics (B.Sc.), and cybersecurity (B.Sc. ) and Historically Oriented Cultural Studies (BA) as well as the master’s degree in Business Law for Business Practice (LL.M.). 47% of all students were enrolled in one of these courses in 2019.

Collaborative Research Centers

There are currently (as of 2020) four Collaborative Research Centers (SFB), three Transregio Programs (TRR) and two DFG Priority Programs (SPP) that are funded by the German Research Foundation:

  • TRR 152: Control of body homeostasis using TRP channel modules (together with LMU Munich , Freiburg, Heidelberg, TU Munich and Leipzig)
  • TRR 195: Symbolic tools in mathematics and their application (together with TU Kaiserslautern and RWTH Aachen )
  • TRR 219: Mechanisms of Cardiovascular Complications in Chronic Renal Insufficiency (with RWTH Aachen University )
  • TRR 248: Basics of understandable software systems - for a comprehensible cyber-physical world (with TU Dresden )
  • SFB 894: Ca2 + Signals: Molecular Mechanisms and Integrative Functions
  • SFB 1027: Physical modeling of non-equilibrium processes in biological systems
  • SFB 1102: Information density and linguistic coding
  • SPP 1608: Ultrafast and temporally precise information processing: normal and dysfunctional hearing
  • SPP 1757: Functional specializations of neuroglia as critical determinants of brain activity

Excellence initiative and strategy

As part of the excellence initiative , the M2CI Cluster of Excellence - Cluster of Excellence on Multimodal Computing and Interaction and the Graduate School of Computer Science were funded at Saarland University from November 2007, and the renewal application was also successful from November 2012. Since January 2019, the university has no longer been funded by the Excellence Strategy.

Leading-Edge Cluster

Saarland University is part of the top cluster software cluster , which was funded by the BMBF as part of the top cluster competition from 2010 to 2015 . Research environment

German Research Center for Artificial Intelligence

Renowned research institutions have settled in the vicinity of Saarland University. The computer science location includes the German Research Center for Artificial Intelligence (since 1988), the Max Planck Institute for Computer Science (since 1988) and for Software Systems (since 2004), the Leibniz Center for Computer Science at Schloss Dagstuhl (since 1989) and the CISPA - Helmholtz Center for Information Security (since 2019).

The Fraunhofer Institute for Non-Destructive Testing (since 1972), the Leibniz Institute for New Materials (since 1987) and the Steinbeis Research Center Material Engineering Center Saarland (MECS) (since 2009) conduct research in the field of materials science and engineering .

The Fraunhofer Institute for Biomedical Technology in Sulzbach / Saar (since 1992), the Korea Institute of Science and Technology Europe (since 1996) and the Helmholtz Institute for Pharmaceutical Research Saarland (2009) conduct research in the field of biosciences.

Libraries

Saarland University and State Library

The library system at Saarland University is in a process of restructuring, in which smaller libraries have been merged into larger administrative units. The medical department in Homburg / Saar also belongs to the central library of the Saarland University and State Library (SULB) . Other large libraries are the campus library for computer science and mathematics, together with the libraries of the German Research Center for Artificial Intelligence (DFKI) and the Max Planck Institute for computer science and software systems , the natural science and technology library including the Leibniz Institute for New Materials , the Departmental Library 1 of the Philosophical Faculty, the Departmental Library of Empirical Human Sciences and the economics and law libraries, which have an additional focus on European law. After the renovation of the central library building, the philological library has been integrated there, which includes the areas of English / American studies, German, Romance studies and, from 2020, applied linguistics. In addition to the members and affiliates of Saar University, all libraries are also accessible to the general, scientifically interested public.

In addition, the library operates three document servers (annual bibliography of Saarland University, Scidok as the document server of Saarland University, Saardoc as archive server for documents relating to Saarland).

The Saarland University and State Library supplies its around 12,500 active borrowers with literature from all subject areas. In accordance with its collecting mandate as the state library, it also collects relevant literature on Saarland and the Saar-Lor-Lux area. The inventory currently comprises around 1.6 million units. Electronic magazines from large packages have meanwhile almost completely replaced print products: In 2017, in addition to 560 individual subscriptions, around 48,000 magazines were available in digital form via packages.

fees

A semester fee of 288 euros (WS 2020/21) is charged, which is made up of the following contributions:

  • a semester ticket (124 euros) for public transport throughout the Saarland in the saarVV tariff area
  • a contribution to the student union (96.70 euros)
  • an administrative fee (50 euros), which is levied nationwide in most of the federal states.
  • a general student body fee (16 euros)
  • a contribution to accident, liability and theft insurance (1.30 euros)

Special features : At all universities in Baden-Württemberg , Berlin , Bremen , Hesse , Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania , Rhineland-Palatinate , Saxony , Saxony-Anhalt , Schleswig-Holstein and Thuringia , the contributions to the general student body for the winter semester 2020/21 are lower than at the University of Saarland; in Bavaria no fees are charged at all. A separate collection of a contribution to accident, liability and theft insurance is also rather unusual in a nationwide comparison.

For senior students aged 55 and over, there are additional semester fees of 400 euros. Enrolled students from other universities (second students) generally pay 315.65 euros, although this does not apply to students of the TU Kaiserslautern , the University of Koblenz-Landau and the University of Trier (University Association Southwest), who are mutually exempt from fees or contributions. The semester ticket is not included in this amount and can optionally be purchased by second students.

Between 2003 and 2010, long-term tuition fees and general tuition fees were levied in addition to the mandatory semester fee.

Worth knowing and facts

  • The General Student Committee (AStA) supports studies and social life on campus with a large number of presentations. In addition to advice and events on student culture, the AStA also organizes UNIFILM, the cinema in the Audimax.
  • Orga-TV was the university's student television. During the semester, the students broadcast live over the Internet every Wednesday at 6:18 p.m. as part of the media and communication management major.
  • The Saar University maintains numerous partnerships with foreign universities all over the world. With around 18% foreigners, it is one of the most international universities in Germany.
  • University sports are open to all university members and offer a wide range of activities for both popular and top-class sports. Due to the proximity to the Hermann-Neuberger-Sportschule , a large number of first-class sports facilities are available.
  • The university also offers students participation in an orchestra, choir or big band. The semester usually ends with a concert, and the university's big band performs at some events, such as the semester opening in the Audimax.
  • In 1965, Rabbi Benyamin Barslai founded the first Jewish student community at a German university after the Second World War .
  • The 2.5 hectare botanical garden of the Saarland University was located on the campus . This was closed on April 1, 2016 as the first botanical garden of a comprehensive university in Germany.
  • The original and cast collection of the Archaeological Institute can be viewed by appointment.
  • Since the summer semester of 2008, Saarland University has had a nationwide unique range of courses, the Europaicum certificate. This is an additional qualification with a focus on Europe, the acquisition of which goes hand in hand with getting to know Europe-oriented research and professional fields.
  • Children's university: Saarland University offers lectures for children from 8 to 14 years of age every semester. In it, professors from the university answer questions on everyday topics.
  • Theater groups: Saarland University has a total of four active student theater groups: Thunis (German-speaking), ACT (English), Le Pont (French) and Los Mutantes (Spanish).
