Villeret is a French commune with 300 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Aisne department in Picardy . It belongs to the arrondissement Saint-Quentin , the canton Le Catelet and the municipality association Pays du Vermandois .
geography
The commune is on the border with the Somme department , about thirteen kilometers northwest of Saint-Quentin .
history
The village was occupied by German troops during the First World War . In the spring of 1917 they withdrew to the Siegfried Line and destroyed the village that had previously been evacuated. The fate of the village in those years was documented in literature by Ben Macintyre .
