Wallendorf is a border town to Luxembourg at the confluence of the Sauer and Our rivers in the Eifel in the Eifelkreis Bitburg-Prüm in Rhineland-Palatinate . The district Gaymühle belongs to Wallendorf. The local community belongs to the Verbandsgemeinde Südeifel . Wallendorf is a state-approved resort .

On the other side of the Sauer is Wallendorferbrück , part of the Luxembourg municipality of Reisdorf .

history

Archaeological finds from the "Völkerhöhle" near Wallendorf show that the area was settled in prehistoric times as early as the Stone Age. Jewelery and statuary finds from Roman times as well as uncovered grave goods from Franconian times continue the settlement history. After excavations, an oppidum of the Treveri was found on Kasselt , which was further populated after the Gallic War and the rule of the Romans .

The first documentary mention under the name Vualcheresdorf took place in 1136 in connection with the Liebfrauenstift in Prüm . It is unclear whether the name goes back to vallis (valley) or a Roman called Valo . In later writings, Waildorff and Valendorff are mentioned.

Until the end of the 18th century, Wallendorf was the capital of a dairy farm in the County of Vianden in the Duchy of Luxembourg , as an estate of the Lords of Fels in Moestroff in Luxembourg . In 1795 French revolutionary troops had taken possession of the Austrian Netherlands , to which Luxembourg was then part. Under the French administration , the area belonged to the canton Vianden in the Arrondissement Diekirch , which belonged to the department of forests . Due to the resolutions at the Congress of Vienna , the place came to the Kingdom of Prussia in 1815 . Wallendorf became the seat of a mayor's office of the same name in the Bitburg district .

During the Second World War Wallendorf was the scene of fighting three times. On September 14, 1944, after the town was destroyed, US troops crossed the Sûre to advance towards Bitburg . In the course of the Ardennes offensive in December 1944, the place was again in the crossfire of the opponents, the Americans withdrew. On February 7, 1945, Wallendorf was again the target of tank and troop units of the US Army, which were finally able to form bridgeheads. Wallendorf was left badly destroyed.
