history

The area was first settled around 3000 years ago in the Mühlleiten cadastral community. The settlement can be explained by finds of cremation graves. In 791, on the orders of Charlemagne, the Saxons invaded the region around what is now Groß-Enzersdorf along the Danube. The reason for this was the incursion and defense of the Avars . It was also named after the Saxons of an arm of the Danube and a Danube island, on which today's Sachsengang Castle is located. Sachsengang Castle is considered to be the original cell of Groß-Enzersdorf.

The place was founded in 870 on the then Danube island Sachsengang as a meierhof by the Engelschalk family. The recorded name was Encines Village . The Passau residents, who took over the farm after the Engelschalkers died out in 893, built a chapel in the immediate vicinity. In 1021 Emperor Heinrich II donated parts of the surrounding area to the Weihenstephan Monastery, and in 1028 the property was exchanged for the Freising Monastery. In 1202 Enzersdorf was pledged to the Hochstift Freising according to a contract between Otto II. Von Freising and the Passau Cathedral Chapter . The church is mentioned for the first time in the document and the market is named as a parish. From the year 1298 the island Sachsengang was completely in hands of Freising, the seat of the administration of Freising was now Entzeinestorf . Because of this, a Freising Mohr can be found in the local coat of arms. The city charter was granted in 1396 and the city wall , which has been preserved to this day, was built.

When the Turks attacked Vienna in 1529, they conquered and devastated the city. Subsequently, Croats were settled to colonize the destroyed places and to cultivate the fields. The Croatian Gate still bears witness to this today. In 1554 the city burned down except for a few houses and was haunted by wolves. During the Thirty Years War , Swedish horsemen plundered, pillaged and occupied the place. More disasters followed in the 17th century: the plague raged in 1679 (a separate plague cemetery was set up outside the city) and in 1683 the Turks once again devastated the city and its surroundings. In 1803 the Hochstift Freising was secularized, Enzersdorf became part of the Habsburg family. In 1850 Groß-Enzersdorf became the seat of a district administration, which was moved to Floridsdorf in 1897.

After Austria was " annexed " to the Third Reich , Groß-Enzersdorf was incorporated into Vienna in 1938, like many other surrounding communities, which then became Groß-Wien . Groß-Enzersdorf gave its name to the 22nd district of Vienna that was newly created in the course of the incorporation in 1938. On October 29, 1938, the local NSDAP group forced the head of the cultural community, Dr. Karl Katz to “donate” the synagogue at Kaiser-Franz-Josef-Straße 11 to the German Gymnastics Federation for “charitable purposes and for the maintenance of physical exercise for German youth in Groß-Enzersdorf”. On October 7, 1944 , bombs hit houses in Groß-Enzersdorf, causing deaths among the population. On April 12, 1945 soldiers of the Red Army took Groß-Enzersdorf. It was not until 1954 that Groß-Enzersdorf became an independent municipality again and the 22nd district of Vienna was renamed Donaustadt .

In Groß-Enzersdorf there is a large plant for frozen food production, which mainly processes vegetables from the surrounding growing areas in Marchfeld . In addition to around 800 employees, many farms in the region are also economically dependent on this deep-freeze plant. Opened in 1965, it was part of the Unilever Group for a long time and produced ice cream and frozen food, from 1977 as part of the Unifrost company . In 1998, Austria Frost was re-established and Unifrost took over frozen food production. With this step, the production of ice cream was stopped. In 2001 Austria Frost was taken over by the 11er group of companies in Vorarlberg. At the end of 2005 Austria Frost had to file for bankruptcy, but was taken over shortly afterwards in December 2005 by the German Frenzel Group, which is based in Mochau in Saxony . When the company slipped into crisis again in 2008, it threatened to end again. In December 2008 the company was taken over by the largest European manufacturer of frozen vegetables, the Belgian Ardo Group.

In addition, the Smola barracks of the Federal Armed Forces was located in Groß-Enzersdorf, which was closed in the course of the army reform in 2007 and has already been sold by the BIG .
