The municipality Akhmeta ( Georgian ახმეტის მუნიციპალიტეტი , Akhmetis munizipaliteti ) is an administrative unit (roughly equivalent to a district ) in the Kakheti region in eastern Georgia .

geography

The administrative center of the municipality is the city of Akhmeta . The area is 2207.6 km².

In the west, Akhmeta municipality is bounded by the municipalities of Dusheti and Tianeti of the Mtskheta-Mtianeti region , in the north and northeast by the republics of Chechnya and Dagestan of the Russian Federation , in the southeast by the municipality of Telavi and in the south by the municipality of Sagaredscho .

The south of the municipality, in which all larger towns are located, occupies the upper part of the Alasani valley. The central part is crossed in a west-east direction by the main ridge of the Great Caucasus , which there reaches a height of about 3000 to 3500  m ; with the 3578  m high Schawiklde on the eastern border with Russia. The area north of the main ridge and watershed ridge, called Tusheti , therefore already belongs to Europe if the inner Eurasian border is assumed to be there . It is crossed by the rivers Tushetis Alasani and Pirikiti Alasani, which unite shortly before crossing the state border with Russia to Andijskoje Koisu . In the north, Tushetia is closed off by the Tushetian ridge along the state border, which with peaks such as Tebulosmta ( 4493  m , highest mountain in the East Caucasus, in the far northwest of the municipality on the border with Russia and the municipality of Dusheti), Komito ( 4261  m ) and Diklosmta ( 4285  m ) towers considerably above the main ridge in this part of the mountain range.

Tusheti cannot be reached by road from Akhmeta on the territory of the municipality; the only one to cross the national road Sch44 ( შ 44 ) further east, coming from the Telavi municipality, over the main ridge over the 2984  m high Orizqali pass.

Population and administrative division

The municipality has 31,461 inhabitants (2014); this is almost a quarter less than in the previous census in 2002 (41,641).

Population development

Note: census data

The largest localities besides the city of Akhmeta (7,105 inhabitants) are the villages of Duissi , Kwemo Alwani , Matani and Semo Alwani (2014), each with over 2000 inhabitants .

The municipality is divided into the independent capital Akhmeta and 15 municipalities (Georgian temi, თემი or simply "village", Georgian sopeli, სოფელი ) with a total of 107 localities. Of these, however, 51 have no permanent residents; it is mostly about de facto abandoned small villages in the municipality of Tusheti (also called Omalo after the capital), which corresponds to the remote mountain region of Tushetia in the north of the municipality.
