He played his entire career for the Detroit Lions in the National Football League (NFL) and is nicknamed "Megatron". In 2012, he signed one of the most lucrative sports deals with the Lions, valued at $ 132 million and had an eight-year term. Johnson had a rare combination of height (1.96 m), strength, speed (10.3 seconds at 100 m), wingspan and coordination. With 1,964 yards, he holds the record for the most captured yards in a single season.

Early years

Johnson attended Sandy Creek High School in Tyrone , Georgia. Even in high school, he was viewed as a future wide receiver in the NFL due to his outstanding physique. In 2004, he was named the best player in his school and the seventh best high school player nationwide.

He also set the school record for most balls caught, most yards and most touchdowns in the freshman year of college. For this achievement he was elected to the First Team All- ACC .

NFL draft

In 2007 Johnson signed up for the NFL Draft . He was characterized by extraordinary physique, despite his 1.96 meters and 108 kilograms, he ran the 40-yard sprint in 4.35 seconds at the NFL Combine and jumped 1.14 meters from a standing position. Even before his NFL career, Johnson was compared to Randy Moss . Johnson was selected as the second player by the Detroit Lions in the first-round draft and signed a six-year contract in August 2007.

NFL career

Johnson made his debut for the Lions in the game against the Oakland Raiders on September 9, 2007 , which was won 36:21 because of Johnson's performance - he caught four passes for 70 yards and scored a touchdown. He scored his first touchdown in the running game on October 21, 2007 when he carried a ball over 32 yards into the end zone . It was during this time that Johnson got his nickname: In an interview with wide receiver Roy Williams, he called Johnson " Megatron " because of his particularly strong physique and his good game , because he was so terrifying and equipped with such large hands as the combat robot of the same name. He finished his first year with 48 passes caught for 756 yards and four touchdowns.

Johnson caught balls over 1,000 yards for the first time in his sophomore year in the NFL. A total of 78 passes for 1,331 yards and twelve touchdowns. Despite this performance, the Lions ended the season without a single win with a record of 0:16, the worst performance by a team in NFL history. Johnson's performance was all the more impressive as he played with three different quarterbacks .

In 2009, the Lions got a new head coach , Jim Schwartz , who completely rebuilt the team. The Lions finished the season 2:14, and Johnson had to play with three different quarterbacks at times after rookie quarterback Matthew Stafford injured his shoulder in a game against the Cleveland Browns and was out for the rest of the season. Overall, Johnson caught 67 passes for 984 yards and five touchdowns in 14 games.

In the 2010 season, Johnson caught 77 passes for 1,120 yards and scored twelve touchdowns in 15 games. Due to injuries to the quarterbacks, Johnson played with three quarterbacks at times this year. The consistency in his performance earned him his first Pro Bowl participation in 2010 . He was also elected to the Second All Pro team .

In the 2011 season Johnson was able to improve again by scoring 1681 yards of space and 16 touchdowns with 96 passes caught. The Lions reached the play-offs for the first time since 1999 with ten wins and six losses . In the 2012 season, in which the Lions clearly missed the play-offs with just five wins this season, Johnson made a personal highlight: he gained 1,964 yards of space through trapped passes, breaking Jerry Rice's record .

In 2012, Johnson signed an eight-year, $ 60 million contract that made him the NFL's highest-paid wide receiver. He prevailed against 42 other players and graced the cover of Madden NFL 13. Between the 9th and 16th day he caught balls for at least 125 yards in every game, breaking the record of Pat Studstill . On December 22, 2012, in the game against the Atlanta Falcons , he set Jerry Rice's record for most yards caught (1,848) in a season. Johnson took part in the Pro Bowl and narrowly failed at the 2000-yard mark at the end of the season . He caught 122 balls and gained 1,964 yards of space.

On October 27, 2013, Johnson caught 14 of 16 passes thrown in his direction while defeating the Dallas Cowboys , ending the game with 329 yards and a touchdown. In doing so, he set a new franchise record for the Lions by surpassing Cloyce Box from 1950. It was also the best value ever recorded in a regular-time game and the second-best ever in NFL history after Flipper Anderson's 336 yards in a 1989 overtime win. This game also set Lance Alworth's record for most games (5) with more than 200 yards trapped one. On Matchday 10, he scored two touchdowns, making him the Lions record holder for most touchdowns caught (63). He was elected to the Pro Bowl, but could not participate due to an injury.

In the 2014 season Johnson had to come up again and again due to persistent injury problems, but with the new signing Golden Tate , which relieved him a bit, and a good defense, the Lions reached the play-offs. In the Thanksgiving game against the Chicago Bears , he managed to break the 10,000 yard mark in captured passes. He only needed 115 games for this - no other player succeeded in doing this faster. At the end of the season he was elected to the Pro Bowl for the fifth time.

In his ninth season, he was elected to the Pro Bowl for the sixth time in 2015. Johnson caught 88 passes for 1,214 yards and nine touchdowns that season. Due to his high-value contract and for NFL players of advanced age, there were repeated rumors about his future with the Lions, which he fueled with a published statement after the end of the season when he announced that he was thinking about a possible end of his career. On March 8, 2016, Johnson announced the end of his career.
