Cars 2

Cars is an animated film released by Pixar in 2006. It is the first film on which director John Lasseter has worked again as a director and not just as a producer since Toy Story 2 (1999) . The official cinema release in Germany was September 7, 2006.

In "Cars" all characters are cars that behave like humans or animals. There are no people in the film. On July 28, 2011, the sequel to the film, Cars 2 , was released in Germany . In addition, a series of computer-animated short stories were created between 2008 and 2011 under the title Cars Toon - Hooks Unbelievable Stories , which are kept in the style of the film and were or can be seen as a supporting film for other Pixar productions in the cinema and on television. The third part of the film series was released in 2017 under the title Cars 3: Evolution .

action

After there was a triple draw in the last race for the "Piston Cup", "Lightning McQueen", a speaking NASCAR car (according to Mister "John Gunnell" is a Trans Am), has to go to a decisive race in Los Angeles . On the way, however, he is separated from his transport truck at night. So he has to find his way to California on his own . Disoriented (like all real NASCAR cars, he has no headlights) he ends up on Route 66 in “Radiator Springs”, where he accidentally destroys the only village street. He is sentenced to repair it.

While he is busy, he befriends Hook (in the original: Mater), the tow truck. He also falls in love with Sally, a Porsche. She explains to him how lively Radiator Springs used to be, but has lost all customers with a new interstate and has disappeared from the map. Sally was a successful lawyer in LA. She fled the big city life and lives here because of the stunning scenery. There is also a conflict with Doc Hudson, who used to be a famous racing car himself. After a serious accident, he was no longer accepted by his racing team, which is why he initially viewed racing cars like Lightning with contempt. When the road is finished, Lightning made friends with all the residents of the village and actually doesn't want to leave. The media and his racing team find him again because Doc Hudson called them and pick him up for the big race.

During the race, Lightning is at first unable to concentrate and is far behind because he keeps thinking back to Radiator Springs. But suddenly he realizes that his friends are at the pits and by his side. With this support he takes the lead and is close to winning when his competitor "King", for whom this is the last race before retirement, is knocked out. Instead of claiming the already certain victory for himself, Lightning stops and pushes the badly damaged King over the finish line so that he can finish his last race. So he loses the Piston Cup, but wins the respect of all other cars and prevents the King from suffering the same fate as Doc Hudson.

After Lightning opened its new racing headquarters in Radiator Springs, the place became known and popular again. In addition, he and Sally reopen the previously very popular “Wheel Well” car hotel.

criticism

“A detailed animated film with lots of funny ideas and bizarre supporting characters. The animators consistently focused on the facial expressions of the virtual tin workers. The arsenal of movement of the painted 'faces on wheels' is limited to driving forwards and backwards and gesturing with the tires, but this reduction arouses protective instincts in a lovable way. "

"Rush right into the heart at full throttle."

- TV feature film

“Technically breathtaking as usual, very funny, very cute. And yet this is also the first Pixar film with small hangers "

- cinema.de

In the end, “Cars” is one of the few Pixar films that doesn't have to be classified as an absolute must-see. For an entertaining evening at the cinema, however, it is clearly better than most competing productions. "

- filmstarts.de

“Using the latest technology, a film world is being created in which modern technology has negative connotations. The filmmakers of the previous Pixar films avoided this balancing act and did not even address the topic. But in Cars it is a central part of the story. John Lasseter's film is one of the animated films that, despite spectacular images and wonderful little details, never really gets going. "

backgrounds

  • The working title of the film was "Route 66", but was changed to "Cars" in 2002 so that the film would not be confused with the television series of the same name from the 1960s. " Cars - Autos wie wir " was originally intended for the German version, but is now only marketed under the original title in Germany.
  • During the crossing to California there is a cameo of the birds from Pixar's short film Der Vogelschreck (original title: For the Birds ) on the interstate . These are the only non-motorized living things in the film.
  • One scene during the final race shows the Pizza Planet truck from Pixar's first movie Toy Story , which has since appeared in most Pixar films.
  • The plot of Cars shows strong parallels to the film Doc Hollywood with Michael J. Fox .
  • Lightning and Hook have fun with "tractor pushing". This refers to the urban legend of cow pushing .
  • During production, Joe Ranft , who was co-director, died in a car accident. The film was dedicated to him.
  • Heiko Waßer and Christian Danner , the Formula 1 commentators from RTL , also synchronize the commentators in the film.
  • The town of Radiator Springs was inspired by original locations on Route 66. "Ramone's Body Shop" is based on the "U-Drop_Inn" in Shamrock (Texas) . The “Brownlee Diner” in Glenrio (Texas) is also one of the building models, as is the “Midpoint Café” on Route 66 in Adrian (Texas) , which was the inspiration for the “Flo's V-8 Café” . The model for the figure of the "Hook" ( "Tow Mater" ) was an old rusty "L-170 Truck" from International Harvester. It stands as a decoration in front of the "Four Women on the Route Diner" on Main Street in Galena (Kansas) .
  • The Disney film Planes is set in the same series as Cars, but was not produced by Pixar.
  • Strip "The King" Weathers is spoken in German by the three-time Formula 1 world champion Niki Lauda . The main character Lightning McQueen is voiced by Daniel Brühl , who later portrayed Lauda in his biopic Rush - Alles für die Sieg .
  • The budget for this film was $ 120 million. The gross profit was around 462 million US dollars worldwide.

Sequels

Two sequels of the film were released: Cars 2 (2011) and Cars 3: Evolution (2017).
