The German Three Cushion Championship 1970/71 (DDM) was the 37th edition of this tournament series and took place from December 10th to 12th, 1970 in Gelsenkirchen , North Rhine-Westphalia .
Tournament commentary
The Gelsenkirchen-Wattenscheid billiard district acted as the host, and a sports hall acted as the venue for the first time. The choice fell on the Gelsenkirchen sports hall center Schürenkamp. It served the organizer as a test run for the European Championship taking place in the 1971/72 season and was rated as successful and very satisfactory by both the players and the visitors.
As in previous years, there was again a field of 10 players who competed in two groups. The bottom of the group were eliminated and had to watch the main round from the bench. Again it hit Gert Tiedtke , who as an art pusher still did not feel at home in the three cushion, unlike his older brother August. However, this time the 20-time gold madaillen winner had to admit defeat to Erich Heinrichs from Cologne and thus awarded the championship title. Nevertheless, it caused a surprise. In the second round of the group stage, he beat Josef Janzen with 60:24 in just 39 shots, setting a new German average. He screwed this up from the old mark of 1.428 to the new high of 1.538. At the same time, he surpassed his own 29-year-old DDM record from 1941 (1.315). In the end, the record champions, who won 20 gold medals in 35 years, only got the silver medal. This was also his last participation in the DDM. In the summer of 1972, the exceptional player died of cancer at the age of only 59.
mode
It played "everyone against everyone" ( round robin mode ) to 60 points with a push . In the qualifying round, the game was played in two groups of five players each. The best eight players made it to the finals. All games were included in the final ranking.
