The first six teams, taking their points with them, played out the German champions in a single round and thus came up with 46 games each. The four last-placed clubs, however, had to go into the relegation round, the last-placed had to relegate to the 2nd Bundesliga. The relegation round was also played as a double round, taking the preliminary round points with you, so that the teams had played 48 games at the end.
