The film takes place a year after the events of Finding Nemo and is set on the coast of California . As early as 2013 it was confirmed that some characters from Finding Nemo will be seen again, including Nemo, Marlin and the inhabitants of the aquarium.

The film was released in North American cinemas on June 17, 2016 and in German cinemas on September 29, 2016.

action

The little pallet doctorfish Dory is separated from her parents as a small child. She grows up and unsuccessfully asks other sea creatures to help them find her family. However, due to her amnesia , she is slowly losing memories of her childhood and her parents. On her journey through the ocean she finally meets the clown fish Marlin and helps him to find his son Nemo .

A year later, Dorie lives with Marlin and Nemo on the coral reef . On one of Nemo's school trips that she takes part in as a companion fish, Dorie suddenly remembers that she has a family. Her memory problems make it difficult for her, but she remembers fragmentarily that she lived with her parents at the jewel of Morro Bay .

Marlin and Nemo go on a search with Dorie. With the support of the Crush sea turtle , they travel to California through an ocean current . Once there, Dory accidentally wakes a squid by loud calls for her parents , which almost devours Nemo. After being insulted by Marlin, Dorie swims sadly to the surface of the water. There she is promptly captured by staff from the nearby Marine Biological Institute, also known as the Jewel of Morro Bay .

She comes to the quarantine station, where she is tagged and meets a disgruntled octopus named Hank. Because of his bad experiences, Hank doesn't want to go back to the sea, but rather spend his life in an aquarium. In exchange for her marker to help him be transported to an aquarium in Cleveland , Hank decides to help Dory. On her way through the institute, Dorie remembers more and more details from her past. In one of the pools they meet their childhood friend Destiny, a nearsighted whale shark , and Bailey, a beluga whale who thinks his echo sounder is broken. When Dory finally arrives at her former home, she learns that the rest of her species are to be transported to Cleveland.

Marlin and Nemo have meanwhile also come to the institute with the help of the sea lions Smutje and Buje and the ice diver Becky. They meet Dory again in the pipe system. Together with her and with the help of Bailey, who has learned how to use his echo sounder, they get back to the quarantine station. There they will find the other pallet doctor fish that are being prepared for transport.

They tell Dorie, however, that her parents started looking for her shortly after she disappeared and never returned. When loading the fish into the truck for Cleveland, Hank accidentally leaves Marlin and Nemo in the tank, and the three are loaded into the truck.

In the excitement, Dorie falls into the drain and lands back in the sea in front of the institute. Left entirely to her own devices, she is desperate at first, but then follows her feelings and finds a trail of clams. She remembers that her parents laid such a trail as a child to show her the way home. She follows the mussel shells to an empty house, to which many other traces lead. As she is about to leave the place, she sees her parents Jenny and Charlie. The three of them are overjoyed to be together again, and their parents tell her that they have been waiting for them at this point the whole time.

Dorie remembers her friends and the truck again. She calls Destiny and Bailey for help, and they escape from their pools into the sea. Together they create a distraction. Dory ends up in the truck. But you no longer manage to escape in time before it continues. Dorie finally manages to convince Hank of a life in the ocean, and together they hijack the truck. You drive back towards the sea, steer the truck into the water and free all fish.

Dory, her parents and all of her friends return to Marlins and Nemo's coral reef and live together there.

After the credits, you can see the aquarium inhabitants from the first film, still trapped in their plastic bags, arriving in front of the institute. There they are promptly fished out of the sea by the staff.

production

Production history

In 2005, after disagreements between Michael Eisner (Disney) and Steve Jobs (Pixar) over the distribution of the Pixar films, Disney announced the founding of a new animation studio. Sequels to the seven Disney-owned Pixar films released between 1995 and 2006 should be published under the name Circle 7 Animation . The studio developed Toy Story 3 and Monster Uni and hired scriptwriter Laurie Craig to draft a script for Finding Nemo 2 . After Eisner was replaced by Robert Iger as CEO of Disney, Circle 7 was dissolved again. Instead, the takeover of Pixar has now been initiated.

In July 2012, it was reported that Andrew Stanton was working on a sequel to Finding Nemo with Victoria Strouse as a screenwriter and a planned release date in 2016 . Then Stanton tweeted, "Have n't you learned anything from Chicken Little ? Calm down and don't believe everything you read. There is nothing to see here yet. #skyisnotfalling “According to an August 2012 report in the Hollywood Reporter , Ellen DeGeneres was already in negotiations to give Dorie her voice again. In September 2012 the project was confirmed by Stanton: “We had actually planned a second Carter film. When that was off the table, everything took on a life of its own. ”In February 2013, the press confirmed that Albert Brooks would return as a spokesman for Marlin.

In April 2013, Disney announced the launch of Finding Dory on November 25, 2015. After a long campaign for the sequel to The Ellen DeGeneres Show , DeGeneres noted:

“I've waited so long, long, long, long, long, long for this day. I'm not crazy, it really took me so long. I know the people at Pixar are already working on Toy Story 16 . But the time they sacrificed was worth it. The script is fantastic. And it has everything that I loved about the first film: it has a lot of heart, it's really funny and the best thing is: it has a lot more dory. "

Speaking of the making of the sequel in a July 2013 interview with the Los Angeles Times , Stanton said, “There was a friendly review from Disney [regarding the sequel to Finding Nemo ]. It was always 'no sequels, no sequels'. [...] [But sequels] are necessary to stay fluent [...] and we told Disney that we wanted to achieve this in a creative way ”.

The ending of the film was changed after those in charge of Pixar watched the film Blackfish , a 2013 documentary about the long-term damage caused to orcas being held in captivity. Originally, some characters were supposed to end up in a SeaWorld-style theme park, but they have now been given a life of freedom. On September 18, 2013, the release date was postponed to June 17, 2016 to allow more time for production. Pixars Arlo & Spot has been brought forward to the original Dorie launch date on November 25, 2015.

Film music

The score is by Thomas Newman . The soundtrack for the film comprises 34 titles and was released on June 17, 2016.

The song in the credits of the soundtrack Unforgettable , written by Irving Gordon and made famous by Nat King Cole in the 1950s, was sung by the Australian singer-songwriter Sia , just as Robbie Williams did the soundtrack to the film Finding Nemo with the Originally sung by Bobby Darin, Beyond the Sea was added. Sia was chosen by Ellen DeGeneres , who dubbed the character Dory in the film. On May 20, 2016, Sia presented the song on her show Ellen . Andrew Stanton , one of the two directors of the film, later commented on the new interpretation of the song: “In the same way that Robbie Williams gave a classic song its unique character for Finding Nemo, Sia has the soulful truth of Nat-King -Cole classic 'Unforgettable' and made something of its own out of it. ”In July 2016, the soundtrack reached number 8 on the soundtrack album charts, where it stayed for another week. In December 2016, the soundtrack was included in the list of candidates (longlist) at the Academy Awards 2017 in the category Best Film Music , from which the members of the Academy will determine the official nominations.

publication

The film premiered on June 8, 2016. The film was released in North American cinemas on June 17, 2016. In the United States, the film, including the short Piper , was released on November 15, 2016 by Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment as Blu-ray and DVD .

Age rating

In Germany, the film was approved by the FSK without any age restriction. In the release certificate it says: Although individual, more complex storylines are certainly not accessible to them, children of preschool age can process the film without the risk of overexcitation.

criticism

The film was able to convince 94 percent of the critics at Rotten Tomatoes (from 281 critics in total, as of August 19, 2017). The consensus there says: Funny, touching and thought-provoking, Finding Dorie offers a wonderful animated adventure that adds another entertaining chapter to the timeless story of its predecessor.

Just a few days after its premiere, the film by Kristopher Tapley and Jenelle Riley of Variety was raised as a possible candidate in the category Best Animated Feature at the upcoming Academy Awards.

Andreas Platthaus from the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung feels the film more witty than its predecessor and highlights several scenes in which the filmmakers made fun of including allusions to the film Alien , including the loudspeaker announcements in the Aquariumpark, which were originally from Sigourney Weaver .

Elmar Krekeler from Die Welt is impressed by the computer animation film techniques. You can see in the film what incredible progress has been made in Pixar's data centers because you have never been able to read such a wide variety of emotions on the faces of the fish, says Krekeler. The makers of the film would have also managed to save the atmosphere of the still handmade Nemo into the new era. However, Krekeler misses a meta-level in the film , as it was in the two Disney-Pixar productions of last year, Zoomania and Everything is upside down .

From the German Film and Media Review was Finds Dorie with the predicate particularly valuable provided. In the explanation it says: “In the end, Dorie knows exactly where her home is. It is where you love each other, belong together and can rely on each other. With this wonderful message, the bright colors of the underwater world, perfect animation, an exciting and entertaining story and a rousing score, 'Finding Dorie' is perfect family entertainment for young and old. "

The German Animal Welfare Association expressed the fear that the film could increase the demand for pallet doctor fish and thus permanently impair the natural population of the animal species, as the animals are caught in the wild due to insufficient breeding success. Similar effects were already found in the film Finding Nemo .

Ellen DeGeneres , the voice of Dorie in the original English, pointed out the serious threats to coral reefs worldwide in connection with the film : The Great Barrier Reef is threatened by coral bleaching , storm damage, water pollution and climate change .

Gross profit

Due to the expected great success, the film started in 4,305 North American cinemas. On the opening weekend, the film grossed $ 135 million in the United States alone, making it the most successful animated film opening weekend in the United States, until it was surpassed by The Incredibles 2 in 2018 . In 2018, revenues in the North American home market were over 486 million US dollars, which makes Dorie not only the second most successful film of 2016 in the USA , but also the most successful animated film there. This record was previously held by the 2004 film Shrek 2 - The Daredevil Hero Returns with $ 441 million.

In Germany, the film had the best theatrical release of the year with 875,948 visitors on the first weekend (September 29 to October 2, 2016). According to the Walt Disney Company Germany, including the Day of German Unity , the holiday on the following Monday, there were even 1.2 million visitors. Overall, the film recorded over 3.8 million visitors in German cinemas, making it the second most successful film of the year in Germany (as of April 23, 2017).

The worldwide revenue of the film is over 1.02 billion US dollars, making the film number 3 of the world's most successful films of 2016 and currently number 42 on the list of the world's most successful films (as of August 8, 2020) occupied. This puts the film ahead of its predecessor Finding Nemo , which grossed over 936 million US dollars worldwide. The film is the second Pixar film to break the $ 1 billion mark after Toy Story 3 and, in 2016, the third Disney film after The First Avenger: Civil War and Zoomania .
