The Football League Second Division 1893/94 was the second season of the Football League Second Division as the second highest English football league . The first game day took place on September 2, 1893 and the last "test games", which were decisive for promotion and relegation, on April 28, 1894.

The second division champions were Liverpool FC , which remained undefeated throughout the season and won all of their home games. In addition to Liverpool, the second and third placed Small Heath and Notts County also qualified for the "test matches" against the three first division clubs Preston North End , FC Darwen and Newton Heath, which are listed in the table below . While Notts County failed there at Preston North End, Liverpool FC and Small Heath secured participation in the elite league in the following season 1894/95.

Both Middlesbrough Ironopolis and Northwich Victoria then no longer took part in the Second Division. While Middlesbrough Ironopolis completely dissolved, Northwich Victoria preferred to play only regional football. In addition, Crewe Alexandra , Manchester City (formerly: FC Ardwick) and Rotherham Town had to worry about staying in the class, but then all received enough votes in the re-election process of the league association to participate again in the Second Division in the following season 1894/95 allowed to. In the Second Division, which was expanded to 16 teams in 1894, instead of Liverpool FC, Small Heath, Middlesbrough Ironopolis and Northwich Victoria, the following five clubs took the vacancies: Burton Wanderers , Bury FC, Darwen FC, Leicester Fosse and Newton Heath.

    "Test matches"

Before the automatic promotion and relegation rule between the first-class First Division and the second-rate Second Division, which first came into effect at the end of the 1898/99 season, potential promoters from the Second Division had to prove themselves in play-off- like “test games”. Participation in the game was also dependent on an election procedure of the league association, which had to decide whether a club might participate. Also in the 1893/94 season there were test matches between the three last-placed first division clubs Preston North End, Darwen FC and Newton Heath and the best second division clubs Liverpool FC, Small Heath and Notts County, from which Liverpool FC, Small Heath and Preston North End as the sporting winners emerged and then each secured a majority of the votes of the league association.
